Denzel Washington in Crimson Tide
Hollywood is full of stars who were born with silver spoons and have huge advantage over others thanks to their rich parents. But there are rag to riches stories too. One of those stars who had a meteoric rise is Denzel Washington.

Washington is widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s most accomplished and respected actors. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he has earned two Academy Awards, numerous Golden Globes, and the admiration of audiences worldwide. Known for his versatility, Washington has delivered unforgettable performances in films like Training Day, Remember the Titans, Crimson Tide, and He Got Game, seamlessly balancing blockbuster appeal with critically acclaimed roles. Despite his immense success, the actor has never forgotten the humble beginnings that shaped his work ethic and determination.

In a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, promoting his film Highest 2 Lowest, Denzel reflected on his early jobs before he became a household name. During the show, Denzel revealed that he first started working as a barber when he was just 11 years old. "I worked as a barber and learned how to hustle there. I could tell people’s financial status just by looking at their shoes. I had all kinds of side hustles,” he recalled. He also used to work as a garbage man at the age of 20. “When I was 20, I worked as a garbage man, covering 22 blocks per shift. That job was grueling—movies are nothing compared to that...We had metal cans, and we had to bang them against the sides of buildings. I worked with an old Italian gentleman who hummed songs the entire time. The job was meant to take eight hours, but if you did it right, it could be done in three," the actor recalled.

During his college years, Washington also took up restaurant work to support himself. “When I went to San Francisco for school, I worked at a restaurant. College meant attending classes and having a job so you could eat, and that place served a lot of soup,” he said.

Today, Denzel Washington has transformed his humble beginnings into a story of extraordinary success. According to Celebrity Net Worth, he is worth $300 million, a testament to his talent, hard work, and relentless perseverance. From barber shops and garbage trucks to Hollywood stardom, Denzel’s journey remains a powerful inspiration for generations to come.
