An Amazon drone delivery went hilariously wrong for a Texas woman when a Prime Air drone dropped her package directly into her swimming pool. Lindsey Austen, a resident of Richmond, Texas, watched as the drone approached her home, opened its delivery hatch and released the package into the water instead of safely dropping it on the ground.

The incident came just one day after Amazon announced plans to significantly expand its Prime Air drone delivery service, with the company aiming to bring ultrafast deliveries to hundreds of new areas across the US.

Amazon shopper Lindsey Austen received an alert Monday informing her that her package was out for delivery through Amazon's Prime Air program, according to Storyful.

The Richmond resident soon heard the distinctive buzzing of the delivery drone and went outside to watch her package arrive.

Instead of seeing the drone safely place the parcel at her home, Austen watched as the aircraft opened its hatch and dropped the package directly into her swimming pool.

The bizarre moment was captured on video and has gone viral on social media, showing the Amazon drone delivery going spectacularly off course.

“When it went into the pool, I was shocked,” Austen said. “I don’t think I’ll be wanting any more drone deliveries.”

It remains unclear what was inside the now waterlogged package.

The video went viral Thursday, just a day after Amazon announced plans to dramatically expand its Prime Air program.

Amazon said the service is designed to provide customers with packages in as little as 30 minutes, bringing another option to its increasingly extensive delivery network.

But Austen's experience offered a humorous reminder that drone delivery technology can still have unexpected moments.

Amazon plans Prime Air expansion to 500 cities

The Amazon Prime Air expansion is expected to take the drone delivery program into hundreds of additional areas.

Amazon announced plans to roll out the ultrafast service across 500 US cities by the end of the year, representing a sixfold expansion of its current footprint.

New locations will include suburban areas around cities such as Chicago, Atlanta, Syracuse and Cleveland.

The drone sites will serve multiple cities within individual metropolitan areas. Amazon says the aircraft will primarily operate in suburban locations, away from skyscrapers and major airports.

How Amazon Prime Air works

Amazon's drone delivery service is designed for smaller orders that can be transported quickly through the air.

The drones can carry one package at a time, with deliveries limited to packages weighing up to five pounds.

The company says Prime Air has already delivered hundreds of thousands of packages this year.

For eligible customers, the service is free for Amazon Prime members placing orders worth more than $50. Smaller qualifying orders cost $2.99 for Prime members, while non-members pay $4.99.

Amazon says delivery incidents are rare

While the Texas woman's pool incident attracted widespread attention, Amazon says problems with its drone deliveries are uncommon.

Amazon spokesperson Allie Payne told KHOU11 that Prime Air has received an overwhelmingly positive response from customers.

“Prime Air provides customers with fast, reliable delivery across a broad selection of products and the response from customers using Prime Air has been overwhelmingly positive,” Payne said.

“Incidents are extremely rare, and when a delivery doesn’t go as planned, we learn from it to improve the experience and take steps to prevent it from happening in the future,” the spokesperson added.

Payne also pointed to Amazon's customer protection policy.

“Amazon’s A-to-Z Guarantee ensures customers can shop with confidence, knowing that we’ll make it right by offering a refund or replacement in the rare instances when items do not arrive as expected.”

For now, customers with backyard swimming pools might think twice before choosing an Amazon drone delivery. For Austen, what should have been an ultrafast delivery became an unforgettable package drop — straight into the water.
