The tax season officially started on Monday, January 27, allowing individuals to file and pay their tax returns for 2024. Meanwhile, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has released essential guidance to help taxpayers file their 2024 returns smoothly.

The IRS has outlined six crucial points for taxpayers to remember:

1. Gather Your Paperwork

To ensure a complete and accurate return, taxpayers should collect all necessary documents, as errors can delay refunds. Essential paperwork includes:

Social Security numbers for all listed on the return.

Bank account and routing numbers.

Investment earnings.

Part-time, seasonal, or gig work.

Self-employment or other business revenue.

Payments received via mobile apps.

3. File Online for Faster Processing

While paper returns are accepted, filing online is the fastest way to get a refund. The IRS highlights that tax software reduces errors by performing calculations and guiding users through their returns.

4. Use Free IRS Resources

Taxpayers can take advantage of various free IRS services, including:

IRS Free File: Available for individuals and families earning $84,000 or less in 2024.

Direct File: Offered in 25 states, supporting more income types and credits with free live chat support in English and Spanish.

Free File Fillable Forms: Electronic IRS forms for those earning above $84,000 who can self-prepare their taxes.

VITA & TCE Programs: Free one-on-one tax assistance for qualifying individuals, including those with disabilities, limited English proficiency, or aged 60+.

MilTax: A free resource for military members, veterans, and their families to file up to three returns at no cost.

5. Choose the Right Tax Filing Option

The IRS advises taxpayers to select a filing method based on their comfort level and needs. Options include self-filing, using online services, or hiring a tax professional. While most tax preparers are reliable, taxpayers should be cautious of fraudulent preparers and use the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers to find qualified professionals.

6. Use IRS Online Tools

IRS.gov offers 24/7 resources for:

Tax questions and answers.

Checking refund statuses.

Paying taxes online without wait times or appointments.

The deadline to file and pay taxes is April 15, 2025. Be sure to prepare and submit your return on time to avoid penalties.
