Who will receive the July 31 SSI payment?
The July 31 payment is for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).SSI is a needs-based federal benefit designed to help people with limited income and resources. Unlike traditional Social Security retirement benefits, eligibility for SSI is not based on your work history.
The program primarily serves:
- Adults aged 65 or older with limited income and resources
- People of any age who have a qualifying disability
- Certain eligible children with disabilities
According to the SSA, about 7.3 million Americans receive SSI benefits.

- Average SSI payment (June 2026): $738.10

Is the July 31 payment an extra SSI check?
Although many recipients will notice two deposits during July, the payment arriving on July 31 is simply the August benefit paid early because of the weekend calendar.
Recipients should budget accordingly, as there will not be another SSI payment on August 1.
How does the SSA send SSI payments?
The SSA offers multiple payment options for beneficiaries.
Direct deposit
The fastest and most common method is direct deposit, with funds transferred directly into a bank or credit union account.
Beneficiaries can update their banking information by calling 1-800-772-1213 or by visiting their local Social Security office.
Direct Express card
Recipients who do not use a bank account can receive benefits through the Direct Express debit card, which is specifically designed for federal benefit payments.
Enrollment is available by calling 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or by visiting a Social Security office.
SSI vs. Social Security: What's the difference?
While both programs are administered by the SSA, they serve different groups.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is based on financial need and is intended for people with limited income and resources who are elderly or have a disability.
Traditional Social Security benefits, on the other hand, include retirement, disability, and survivor benefits and are generally based on a person's work history and payroll tax contributions. More than 71 million Americans receive Social Security benefits through those programs.
Why is the SSI payment arriving on July 31?
SSI benefits are typically paid on the first day of every month. However, when the first falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the SSA issues payments on the last business day before.Because August 1, 2026, falls on a Saturday, eligible SSI recipients will receive their August payment on Friday, July 31.
This means some beneficiaries will receive two SSI payments in July—one on July 1 for July benefits and another on July 31 for August benefits. It does not mean recipients are getting an additional monthly payment.
