Spokane wildfires explode as thousands flee and hundreds of homes burn

Thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate as rapidly spreading Washington wildfires continue to tear through eastern parts of the state, destroying hundreds of homes and buildings around Spokane.

Fire crews are battling multiple blazes under dangerous weather conditions, with strong winds threatening to fuel further spread as emergency officials race to protect communities.

Thousands evacuated as flames spread near Spokane

Authorities said around 5,000 homes have been evacuated after three major wildfires broke out in the Spokane region.


The fires have scorched roughly 21 square kilometres of land, making them among the most significant wildfire emergencies currently unfolding in the western United States.

Despite the widespread destruction, officials said there have been no reported fatalities linked to the Spokane-area fires so far.

Hundreds of homes and businesses destroyed

Emergency officials estimate that nearly 600 structures, including homes, businesses and other buildings, have already been destroyed.

The fires — identified as the Old Trails Fire, Fairview Fire and Meadowview Fire — continue to burn without containment, leaving residents uncertain about when they can safely return.

Authorities have also established an emergency shelter at Spokane's main convention centre to assist displaced families.

Strong winds creating dangerous firefighting conditions

Firefighters warned that worsening weather could make containment efforts even more difficult.

Although temperatures were expected to remain relatively moderate, forecasters predicted wind gusts between 56 and 72 km/h, conditions capable of rapidly pushing flames into new areas.

Emergency officials explained that Spokane's rugged landscape presents an added challenge.

Deep river canyons and steep hillsides funnel strong winds, allowing fires to move quickly uphill before spreading across surrounding terrain.

The combination of shifting winds and difficult topography has complicated firefighting operations throughout the region.

State of emergency declared

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson has declared a state of emergency in response to the growing wildfire crisis.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service issued a "particularly dangerous situation" Red Flag Warning for eastern Washington, signalling an elevated risk of explosive fire behaviour due to dry conditions and powerful winds.

Air quality alerts have also been issued as thick smoke from the fires spreads across the Spokane area.

Western US faces another intense wildfire season

The Spokane-area fires are among dozens of wildfires burning across the western United States, stretching firefighting resources at the federal, state and local levels.

With weather conditions expected to remain volatile, officials continue to urge residents in affected areas to follow evacuation orders immediately and stay alert for rapidly changing fire conditions.
