'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' refuses to let go, wins box office crown for fourth week running

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" topped the North American box office for a fourth consecutive weekend, though collections dropped sharply from the previous week, according to industry estimates.

The Tom Holland-Zendaya starrer earned $39 million over the weekend, a 45% decline from the previous weekend's numbers, data from Exhibitor Relations showed.

The film's domestic total now stands at $854.9 million since its July 31 release, making it the third highest-grossing film ever at the domestic box office, having surpassed 2021's "Spider-Man: No Way Home." Only "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "Avengers: Endgame" rank higher domestically, with the film expected to surpass "Avengers: Endgame's" $858 million tally the following weekend.

Internationally, the film has collected an additional $1.37 billion, taking its worldwide total past 2.2billion,placingitbehindonly"Avengers:Endgame"(2.7 billion) and "Avatar" ($2.9 billion) among the highest-grossing films of all time.

Insidious sequel opens strong

"Insidious: Out of the Further," the sixth installment in the horror franchise, opened in second place with $25.3 million domestically. The film, starring Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea and Maisie Richardson-Sellers, follows a young woman who can summon spirits into the mortal world while being haunted herself. Industry newsletter FranchiseRe described the opening as solid for a sixth franchise installment, noting the drop compared to the previous instalment's 2023 opening was in line with typical sequel trends.

Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" slipped to third place, earning $19.5 million in its sixth weekend, down 17% week-on-week, taking its domestic total to $539.1 million.

Paramount's "Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie" placed fourth with $9.1 million, down 55% from its opening weekend.

Warner Bros' sci-fi thriller "The End of Oak Street," starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, rounded out the top five with $9 million, down 57% week-on-week. The film follows a couple battling to survive after their neighbourhood is transported back to prehistoric times.
