Who gets paid on September 1?

SSI recipients are scheduled to receive their September payment on Tuesday, September 1. SSI is different from regular Social Security retirement or SSDI benefits. The program provides monthly payments to eligible people with limited income and resources who are older, blind or have a qualifying disability.

The September 1 date is not an early payment caused by a weekend or federal holiday. The first day of September falls on a Tuesday this year, so there is no adjustment needed.

Who gets Social Security on September 3?

Beneficiaries who began receiving Social Security before May 1997 generally follow a different payment schedule. The September 3 payment also applies to certain people who receive both Social Security and SSI. The SSA notes that payment timing depends on the type of benefit a person receives as well as other factors.

When will most retirees and SSDI recipients get paid?

For beneficiaries on the regular Wednesday schedule, the payment date depends on the day of the month they were born. If your birthday falls between September 1 and September 10, your payment is scheduled for September 9.

If you were born between September 11 and September 20, expect your payment on September 16. Those born between September 21 and September 31 are scheduled to receive their payment on September 23.

Has the 2026 Social Security COLA already been applied?

Yes. The 2026 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) is 2.8%. The increase began with benefits payable in January 2026 for Social Security beneficiaries.

The September payment schedule itself does not represent a new increase. Instead, beneficiaries will receive their regular monthly benefit according to their individual payment schedule.

With more than 71 million people receiving Social Security benefits as of July 2026, these monthly deposits are an important source of income for millions of Americans.

Beneficiaries can also check their individual payment information through their my Social Security account and review upcoming payments directly with the SSA.

How much will Social Security beneficiaries receive in September?

The amount each beneficiary receives varies considerably depending on factors including their earnings history and the type of benefit for which they qualify.

The latest SSA data show that 71.3 million people received Social Security benefits in July this year. The average monthly Social Security payment across all beneficiaries was $1,940.08, while retired workers, which is the largest group of recipients, received an average of $2,085.98. Disabled workers received an average of $1,635.27.

Another 7.3 million people received SSI in July, with an average monthly payment of $736.54. Some Americans receive benefits from both programs, meaning the groups should not simply be added together. Overall, 75.7 million people were receiving Social Security, SSI or both that month.

Who is eligible for the September 2026 Social Security payments?

Eligibility depends on the type of Social Security benefit you receive. Retirement beneficiaries generally qualify after earning enough Social Security credits through work and reaching the required age to claim benefits.

SSDI payments are available to people who have a qualifying disability and have accumulated enough work credits, with the required credits depending partly on their age when the disability began.

Survivor benefits may be available to eligible spouses, children and, in some cases, other family members of a deceased worker.

For SSI, eligibility is based mainly on age or disability/blindness as well as limited income and resources. SSI is separate from Social Security retirement benefits, although some people can qualify for both programs.

If you already receive benefits, you generally do not need to apply again to receive your September 2026 payment. The payment will be issued according to the SSA's regular schedule.
