According to the U.S. Coast Guard, a debris field was located near Point Loma on Sunday afternoon, prompting a search operation in waters around 200 feet (61 meters) deep.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the twin-engine Cessna 414 went down around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, shortly after taking off. Flight tracking data from Flightaware.com indicated that the plane was en route to Phoenix.
Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have confirmed they are investigating the incident.
