Salma Hayek could not speak English, drive, or know she needed an agent when she came to Hollywood. She now has a $200 million fortune

Salma Hayek arrived in Hollywood with a dream of becoming an actress. What she didn't have was fluent English, a driving license, a green card or even an agent.

Born on September 2, 1966, Hayek turns another year older today and is now one of Hollywood's most recognizable stars. Over a career spanning more than three decades, she has worked as an actress, producer, director, voice actor, model and entrepreneur. Her net worth is estimated at around $200 million in 2026, according to celebrity wealth estimates.

But her Hollywood journey began with a very different reality.


Hayek had already found success in Mexico, particularly through the popular telenovela Teresa. She moved to Los Angeles in 1991 to pursue an American film career, but the transition was far from easy.

In a 2003 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Hayek described just how unprepared she felt when she arrived in the United States.

“I didn't speak English, I didn't have a green card, I didn't know I had to have an agent, I couldn't drive, I was dyslexic,” she recalled.

In the interview, Hayek said, "I knew "shopping" and "eating" English—I could say "blue sweater," "crème brulée," and "Caesar salad"—so I came here thinking I spoke English."

Her lack of English wasn't the only obstacle. Hayek said she was so unfamiliar with the workings of Hollywood that she would send tapes of her Mexican soap opera to people and deliberately select the scenes in which she was crying.

“I thought that crying would really impress them,” she recalled.

Instead, she said, people sometimes looked at her as though she were an alien.

Her accent also became a target. Hayek has recalled being told that her accent would make it difficult for her to get certain roles. As reported by Banderasnews, in one audition for a science-fiction movie, she said a producer told her, “We can't use you.” When she asked why, she recalled being told: “There are no Mexicans in outer space.”

Rather than abandoning her ambitions, Hayek continued working.

Her breakthrough in Hollywood came with Robert Rodriguez's 1995 action film Desperado, in which she starred opposite Antonio Banderas. The role helped introduce her to a much wider American audience and opened the door to larger film projects.

She subsequently appeared in movies including From Dusk Till Dawn, Wild Wild West, Dogma and Traffic.

But one of the most important projects of her career was one she fought to make herself.

Hayek produced and starred in Frida, the 2002 biographical film about Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. She had spent years trying to bring the project to the screen. Her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, making her the first Mexican-born actress nominated in that category.

The film received six Oscar nominations and won two awards, including Best Makeup and Best Original Score.

Hayek's career has since expanded well beyond acting. Through her production company, Ventanarosa Productions, she has been involved in films and television projects, including Ugly Betty. She has also worked with major consumer brands and launched her own beauty line, Nuance by Salma Hayek.

Her business interests have extended into other areas as well, including wellness and beauty ventures.

Her personal life has also connected her to the world of luxury business. Hayek married French businessman François-Henri Pinault in 2009. Pinault is chairman and CEO of Kering, the luxury group associated with brands including Gucci, Saint Laurent and Balenciaga.

Hayek herself, however, came from a comparatively privileged background in Mexico. Her father, Sami Hayek Domínguez, worked in the oil industry and owned an industrial equipment company, while her mother, Diana Jiménez Medina, was an opera singer and talent scout.

Still, none of that guaranteed success in Hollywood.

The woman who arrived in Los Angeles unable to speak English, drive or even understand the basic mechanics of finding an agent eventually became an Oscar-nominated actress, producer and one of the most successful Mexican-born stars in Hollywood.

And decades after she struggled to communicate with Americans beyond words like “blue sweater” and “Caesar salad,” Hayek has built a career that extends far beyond the acting role she originally came to Hollywood to pursue.
