A 55-year-old man in Russia's Leningrad region tragically died after his cat scratched him, with the incident shedding light on the dangers of pet-related injuries for individuals with pre-existing health conditions. Dmitry Ukhin, who suffered from diabetes and poor blood clotting, succumbed to severe blood loss after being scratched by his pet cat, Styopka, on the evening of November 22, according to a report by Daily Mail.

Cat Scratch Leads to Fatal Outcome

Dmitry had been searching for Styopka, who had gone missing two days earlier. After finding and bringing the cat home, an accident occurred later that evening when the feline scratched Dmitry's leg. His health conditions, which included poor blood clotting and likely high blood pressure, escalated the severity of the wound.

Realizing the seriousness of his condition, Dmitry called a neighbor for assistance. Despite efforts to control the bleeding, his condition worsened.

Neighbor's Testimony and Medical Response

A police source stated, “Around 11 pm, a man called emergency services to report his friend was bleeding from his leg due to a torn vein. The scratches on Dmitry's leg were so severe that he died of blood loss.”

The neighbor who assisted Dmitry claimed that emergency medical services arrived too late to save him. Dmitry’s wife, Natalya, confirmed the details of the incident and described Styopka as a gentle and harmless pet who often roamed outdoors. The cat’s current status remains unknown.

Forensic experts are yet to issue an official report on Dmitry’s death. However, a combination of his medical conditions and the delayed medical response was fatal.

Awareness on Pet-Related Injuries

This incident underscores the risks associated with pet injuries, especially for individuals with underlying health issues. Similar events have occurred recently, including a case in India where a 22-year-old man in Faridabad underwent an 11-hour surgery after his pet pitbull bit off most of his ear.

The tragedy serves as a reminder for pet owners to be cautious and seek immediate medical attention for injuries, particularly when health conditions complicate recovery.
