Robert Downey Jr. wears $1.1 million Jacob & Co. watch with no hands: 542 diamonds, two floating rubies and twin triple-axis tourbillons reveal the time in motion

Robert Downey Jr. made a dazzling appearance at Disney’s Legends Awards Ceremony, but it was not just the $1.1 million Jacob & Co. Mystery Triple Axis Flying Tourbillon on his wrist that caught attention. The extraordinary watch has no traditional hands. Instead, two floating rubies circle 556 gemstones and twin triple-axis tourbillons to reveal the time in motion, turning the watch into a miniature mechanical spectacle.

Downey wore the 44mm, diamond-encrusted timepiece while returning to D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California, where he honored former Disney CEO Bob Iger. Although he was not receiving an award, but he had already been inducted as a Disney Legend in 2019. It was his million-dollar wristwear that became a spectacle of its own.

The watch's unusual design also carries an intriguing connection to Downey's upcoming Doctor Doom role, with vivid green tsavorites, red rubies and a gleaming white-gold case giving it an almost comic-book-inspired appearance.

Robert Downey Jr.’s $1.1 million Jacob & Co. watch

The 44mm Jacob & Co. Mystery Triple Axis Flying Tourbillon is crafted from 18k white gold and covered with hundreds of gemstones. The watch contains approximately 542 diamonds weighing 25.11 carats, along with 12 tsavorites totaling 1.44 carats and two rubies weighing 0.23 carat. Altogether, that works out to 556 gemstones and about 26.78 carats.

An earlier caption describing the watch said it was “factory-set with 510 white diamonds, 12 tsavorite indexes and a ruby at the hour and minute markers.” But the gemstones are only part of what makes the watch unusual.

A watch that looks like Doctor Doom’s armor

The timing of Downey’s choice is particularly interesting because of his upcoming role as Doctor Doom in the Marvel universe. The watch’s vivid green tsavorites immediately evoke the green cloak traditionally associated with Doctor Doom. Its white-gold case and diamond-heavy construction have a distinctly metallic, armor-like appearance, while the red rubies provide another splash of color.

The constantly moving mechanical components also give the watch an almost futuristic appearance. At the center is a 0.40-carat Jacob-cut diamond featuring 288 facets. For comparison, a typical round brilliant diamond has 57 or 58 facets.

That unusual centerpiece rotates with the tourbillon assembly, creating a constantly changing display as it catches the light.

How does the Jacob & Co. Mystery Tourbillon tell time?

Despite its dazzling appearance, the watch is also an extremely complicated mechanical creation. Inside is Jacob & Co.’s hand-wound JCAM49 caliber, made up of 460 components. The movement operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and provides approximately 30 hours of power reserve.

The biggest attraction is its pair of central, flying triple-axis tourbillons. Rather than rotating on just one plane, the two regulators move through three different axes. The first rotation takes 60 seconds, while the second and third axes each take 120 seconds. A differential links the two mechanisms and averages their output.

Floating diamonds, rubies and green tsavorites

There are no traditional hour and minute hands on the dial. Instead, a diamond-set hour ring containing 107 diamonds and a ruby moves around the tourbillon. A second ring features 95 diamonds and another ruby.

The two red stones indicate the hour and minutes against 12 green tsavorite markers, giving the impression that the indicators are floating around the watch’s mechanical center.

Tsavorite itself has an interesting history. The vivid green gemstone is a variety of grossular garnet and was discovered in East Africa by Scottish geologist Campbell Bridges in 1967. Tiffany & Co. later introduced it commercially and named it after the Tsavo region in 1974.
