The Terrel Williams Prichard Colon fight remains one of the most tragic episodes in modern boxing. Nearly 11 years after the 2015 bout that left Puerto Rican boxer Prichard Colon with a devastating brain injury, Colon has died at the age of 33.

Colón’s father shared the news via Facebook on Thursday.

“I regret to inform you of the passing of my son Prichard from this earthly world,” Richard Colón wrote, adding: “Now he is in a better world.” Thank you for so many years of love and prayers. As much as you can, please keep us in your prayers,” he added.


The news has once again put the spotlight on Terrel Williams, the boxer who faced Colon that night in Fairfax, Virginia, and what happened to his career after the controversial fight.

What happened during Terrel Williams-Prichard Colon fight?

Prichard Colon entered the October 17, 2015, fight as one of boxing's promising undefeated prospects. He had won his previous 16 professional bouts, including 13 by knockout. Williams was also unbeaten entering the contest.

The fight became controversial because Prichard Colon complained repeatedly about punches to the back of his head, which are illegal in boxing. Williams was penalized during the bout, while Colon was also deducted points for a low blow.

In the ninth round, Williams knocked Colon down twice. After the round, Colon's corner mistakenly began removing his gloves, believing the fight had ended. Colon was subsequently disqualified for failing to answer the bell.

But the most devastating events happened after the fight. Prichard Colon became seriously ill in the dressing room and was taken to hospital. Doctors found a severe brain injury requiring emergency surgery. He subsequently spent 221 days in a coma.

What happened to Prichard Colon?

The injury ended Colon's boxing career at just 23. After waking from his coma, Colon was left with profound disabilities and required extensive care and rehabilitation.

His family remained closely involved in his recovery for years. On August 13, 2026, Colon died at the age of 33, almost 11 years after the fight that changed his life. His death has prompted renewed discussion about the dangers of head trauma in boxing and the events surrounding his final professional fight.

Where is Terrel Williams now?

The Terrel Williams boxer career also changed dramatically after the Prichard Colon fight. Williams had improved his professional record to 15-0 after defeating Colon, but the tragedy had a major impact on him. According to reports, he stepped away from boxing for around two years before returning to competition in 2017.

Williams ultimately retired from boxing in 2019. He has largely stayed out of the public spotlight since then, and there is limited reliable information available about his current personal life or activities.

Williams addressed the tragedy in a 2017 interview, saying: “I pray for Prichard every day. That's never going to change. I wish him nothing but peace and health... I would never intentionally harm someone like that... I don’t place any blame on myself. I prayed about it. I wish the young man really well. It's a hard situation on me and a hard situation on Colon’s family.”
