Peter Cullen, the legendary voice actor best known as the voice of Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise, has died at the age of 85. Cullen died on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles, according to reports. His family confirmed his peaceful passing, saying he was surrounded by loved ones.

Peter Cullen’s cause of death has not been revealed. His family has not announced a specific illness or medical condition connected to his death, and reports citing his representative say the cause remains unclear.

The news marks the loss of one of the most recognizable voices in animation. For more than four decades, Cullen gave life to Optimus Prime, the courageous leader of the Autobots, while also voicing characters including Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh and the Predator in the original Predator film.

Peter Cullen death reason: What is known about his passing?

As of August 27, 2026, no official cause of death has been disclosed.

Cullen died peacefully at his Los Angeles home on August 26, with his family around him. His family later issued a statement remembering the actor and asking fans to honor his legacy by serving their communities and leading with compassion, integrity and loyalty.

The message also included the words, “be strong enough to be gentle,” a phrase closely associated with Cullen and his portrayal of Optimus Prime.

The phrase had a deeply personal origin. When Cullen was preparing to audition for the role of Optimus Prime in the 1980s, his brother Larry, a former Marine, advised him that if he was going to portray a hero, he should make the character strong without relying on stereotypical shouting or bravado. Cullen later explained that he drew directly from his brother when creating Optimus Prime's distinctive voice and personality.

Peter Cullen was the voice of Optimus Prime for more than 40 years

Cullen first voiced Optimus Prime in the original Transformers animated television series in 1984. His deep, commanding voice quickly became inseparable from the Autobot leader.

He later returned to the character for the Transformers live-action movie franchise, beginning with Michael Bay's 2007 film. His return allowed a new generation of audiences to hear the voice that had defined Optimus Prime for fans of the original series.

Cullen continued to voice Optimus Prime across animated projects, films and other Transformers-related appearances. His later credits included Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, released in 2023, and a special appearance as Optimus Prime on The Masked Singer in 2024.

His performance as Optimus Prime was particularly distinctive because Cullen did not simply make the character sound powerful. He gave the Autobot leader a sense of dignity, restraint and compassion — qualities that became central to the character's identity.

From Optimus Prime to Eeyore: Peter Cullen’s other iconic roles

Although Optimus Prime was Cullen's most famous role, his career extended far beyond Transformers.

He was also widely recognized as the voice of Eeyore, the melancholy but beloved donkey from the Winnie the Pooh universe. Cullen's ability to move between the heroic Optimus Prime and the gloomy, understated Eeyore demonstrated his remarkable vocal range.

He also contributed vocal work to the Predator franchise, helping create the creature's distinctive sounds in the 1987 film. His extensive credits included characters and performances across animation, television, film and video games.

Cullen's other notable credits included Monterey Jack in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Captain Flint in Treasure Planet and Thaedus in Invincible. His IMDb credits also list Optimus Prime in Fortnite and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Peter Cullen received a Lifetime Achievement Award

Cullen's contribution to voice acting was formally recognized in 2023 when the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the second annual Children's & Family Emmy Awards.

The award recognized his decades-long contribution to television and film voice acting. During his career, Cullen became one of the most influential performers in animation, creating voices that became instantly recognizable to multiple generations.

At the time, Cullen responded with characteristic humor, joking about whether the Academy had selected “the right Cullen.”
