'Part of Florida could be underwater in next 40 years': Elon Musk says massive geoengineering may be needed or ' it will be game over' for humans

“Extremely severe extinction events happen every 100M years or so and just switching to sustainable energy will not be enough to stop them,” Musk wrote in a post on X.
“Space satellites to control temperature and massive geo-engineering will be needed or it will be game over,” he added.
Musk then outlined a futuristic proposal involving satellites positioned at Earth-Sun Lagrange points.
“And that is, of course, how it will be done,” he wrote. “Sentient satellites, launched into Earth-Sun Lagrange points by mass drivers on the Moon, can solve global warming for ~1B years.”
However, Musk argued that humanity would need to act much sooner to prevent major impacts from sea-level rise.
“But we do need to act much faster than that if people still want to live where the beach is today,” he wrote. “We have about 50 years or so to take action, which should be more than enough time for the space satellites to solve any heating problems.”
Musk also shared a Grok-generated analysis examining when 5% of Florida could be underwater.
According to the analysis, around 2070 could see roughly 5% of Florida's land affected under a relatively high sea-level-rise scenario used in state planning. It cited a 2025 study by the University of Florida’s Center for Landscape Conservation Planning and 1000 Friends of Florida, which estimated that approximately 1.68 million acres could be inundated with about 0.9 metres (3 feet) of sea-level rise.
The analysis also cited estimates of roughly 1 million acres affected by about 0.25 metres (10 inches) of sea-level rise by 2040, rising to approximately 1.68 million acres by 2070 under the scenario examined.
The impacts would also be highly uneven across Florida. Low-lying areas in South Florida, the Everglades, the Florida Keys and coastal and river-connected regions are particularly vulnerable, while higher areas of inland Florida would remain above sea level for much longer.
The timing of future sea-level rise depends heavily on greenhouse-gas emissions and the behaviour of major ice sheets. Higher-emissions scenarios generally produce faster and greater sea-level rise, while lower-emissions pathways slow the increase.
Musk’s proposed “sentient satellites” are a speculative concept rather than an existing climate solution. Ideas involving space-based solar reflectors or other forms of solar radiation management have been studied conceptually, but deploying such systems at the enormous scale Musk describes would require technologies, infrastructure and international agreements that do not currently exist.
His broader point, however, highlights a real scientific debate: whether cutting greenhouse-gas emissions alone will be sufficient to address climate risks, or whether societies may eventually consider additional interventions such as carbon removal or solar geoengineering.
