Summit County residents can report these scam texts to the Federal Trade Commission by visiting reportfraud.ftc.gov.

If you feel like you’re constantly receiving scam calls, texts, or emails, you’re not alone. The Michigan state police has issued a warning about scam text that many people are receiving. The scam text message claims to be from the State of Michigan DMV, so that’s your first red flag, since we don’t have a Department of Motor Vehicles; instead, we have a Secretary of State.


A phishing scam is making waves through Summit County, with fraudsters posing as representatives from the Ohio BMV. According to a press release from the agency, these scammers are pressuring individuals to pay fake outstanding traffic tickets under the threat of having their licenses suspended. The agency warned that the scammers are trying to deceive motorists into revealing personal or financial information.

New scam in Ohio

The text reveals that an individual has an outstanding ticket and threatens various legal actions and some of them include suspension of your driver’s license, if you don’t pay within a few days. On Monday (June 9), the MSP Jackson post received 10 complaints about the text that people are currently receiving.

“If you receive this text, do not fall for this scam,” Ohio BMV Registrar Charlie Norman stated in the press release. “Do not click any links and delete the text. Ohio BMV will never send you a text demanding payment or requesting your personal information.” Summit County residents can report these scam texts to the Federal Trade Commission by visiting reportfraud.ftc.gov. Residents have been asked to stay alert.
