Norway’s King Harald V defied royal tradition to marry the woman he loved. Here's their remarkable decades-long story

Norway’s King Harald V, the reform-minded monarch who modernized the royal family during more than three decades on the throne, died Friday at the age of 89. His death brings an end to the reign of a king who was known not only for his devotion to Norway but also for challenging royal tradition in his personal life.

Harald became king in January 1991, succeeding his father, King Olav V. By the time of his death, he was Europe’s oldest reigning monarch and had spent more than 35 years as Norway’s ceremonial head of state.

But one of the most enduring parts of Harald’s legacy was his relationship with Queen Sonja.

King Harald’s forbidden royal romance

Long before they became Norway’s king and queen, Harald and Sonja Haraldsen were a young couple facing a problem that could have ended their relationship: she was a commoner.

The couple met in 1959 and remained together for nine years before they were allowed to marry. At the time, it was expected that Norway’s future king would choose a bride from another European royal family or the nobility. Harald’s determination to marry Sonja therefore created considerable controversy and led some to warn that the marriage could damage the monarchy.

Harald's father, King Olav V, initially resisted the match. Harald was the only male heir, however, and his refusal to marry could have created a serious problem for the future of the Norwegian monarchy.

After consultations with Norway’s parliament, political leaders and government, Olav eventually gave his consent. The engagement was announced on March 19, 1968, ending years of uncertainty surrounding the couple's future.

On August 29, 1968, Crown Prince Harald married Sonja Haraldsen at Oslo Cathedral.

The wedding represented far more than a royal celebration. It marked a shift in attitudes toward marriage within Norway’s monarchy and helped establish Harald as a future king willing to bend tradition rather than simply follow it.

The couple remained married for more than five decades, eventually celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in 2018.

A king who wanted an open monarchy

That willingness to move beyond old royal conventions also shaped Harald’s approach to the monarchy.

In a 2005 Reuters interview, Harald argued that royal families should not retreat from the greater openness they had embraced.

“If you've opened the gate it's very difficult to close it again,” he said.

His reign was marked by efforts to make the monarchy more modern and accessible. He was also known for his emotional responses during moments of national tragedy and for speaking publicly about tolerance, diversity and inclusion.

After the 2011 terrorist attacks in Norway, Harald became a powerful symbol of national unity. He spoke not simply as a monarch but as a husband, father and grandfather grieving alongside his country.

The king who refused to abdicate

Harald also remained committed to the idea that being king was a lifelong responsibility.

Even as his health deteriorated in his later years, he repeatedly rejected calls to abdicate. He had suffered several health problems, including cancer surgery in 2003 and the fitting of a pacemaker in 2024.

His final illness came in August 2026. He was hospitalized on August 17 and later developed a bacterial infection. The Royal Palace announced that he died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35 a.m. on Friday, August 28.

His death also immediately triggered a new chapter for the Norwegian monarchy. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, automatically succeeded him and became King Haakon VIII.

For many Norwegians, however, Harald's legacy will extend beyond the succession.

He was the king who helped modernize an old institution, stood beside his country through moments of profound grief and, decades earlier, fought to marry the woman he loved.

Harald and Sonja's nine-year wait to marry ultimately became one of the defining personal stories of his reign — a royal romance that helped change what Norway expected from its monarchy.
