The death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells whose young life was cut tragically short has sparked a wide array of questions. After his death, new details have emerged in the death of Nolan Wells after a search volunteer described finding his body on Mississippi's Horn Island. As investigators await official autopsy results, newly surfaced Fourth of July party footage is adding fresh questions to the ongoing case.

Nolan Wells Horn Island body: What search volunteer said

Todd Terrell, president of the nonprofit United Cajun Navy, who was involved in Nolan Wells' search said that his body was found face down and fully clothed near an area known for dangerous rip currents. Nolan Wells' body was found on Mississippi's Horn Island two days after he disappeared during a Fourth of July celebration.


"[His body] was in the same vicinity of where he possibly drowned .… it was not uncommon for the body to have washed up right there," Terrell was quoted as saying by PEOPLE.

Authorities have not yet determined an official cause of death, and autopsy results are still pending.

Terrell explained that the location where the teen was found is notorious for unpredictable water conditions. "These are bad areas," Terrell said.

He described a powerful "washing machine" current that continuously circulates water in the area, adding that similar hazards exist across parts of the Gulf Coast.

Investigators have previously suggested that Wells may have drowned, though officials say the investigation remains active while medical examiners complete the autopsy.

Nolan Wells disappeared during Fourth of July celebration

Nolan Wells and his friends went on a Fourth of July boat trip to Horn Island — a popular destination for holiday revelers off the Mississippi coast with no shelters, no facilities and no communications.

His friends made it back home. Wells, a student and wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College, did not. His body was found two days later, on July 6, facedown in the water off the shoreline of Horn Island by a National Park Service agent.

His mother reported him missing after receiving a call from one of his friends later that evening, triggering an extensive search involving law enforcement and volunteer organizations.

Authorities have said there were no obvious signs of foul play when Wells' body was recovered. However, they have stressed that the final determination will depend on the official autopsy findings.

Family questions what happened before Nolan Wells vanished

Nolan Wells' parents argued that it would have been highly unusual for him to separate from his friends or leave behind his cellphone without telling anyone where he was going.

Friends have reportedly told investigators that Wells decided to remain on the island after meeting a girl and intended to return later on another boat. They also said his phone was intentionally left behind to protect it from water damage.

Those explanations have not satisfied Wells' family, who believe significant gaps remain in the timeline.

Brian Trascher, national vice president of the United Cajun Navy, previously highlighted one of the biggest unanswered questions.

"We have to close the gap between when his friends said goodbye ... to the time he went into the water, because they should be able to pinpoint, and it's weird that they can't."

The family has continued to call for a full and transparent investigation.

New July 4 party footage may capture Nolan Wells before he disappeared

As questions continue, newly surfaced video footage has added another piece to the timeline. According to TMZ, the clip appears to show a man believed to be Wells on the back of an anchored boat during the July 4 celebration on Horn Island.

The individual, whose face is not visible, is seen bending over, possibly to grab a drink. He appears to be wearing light-blue swim trunks similar to those Wells was photographed wearing earlier that day.

The person who recorded the video reportedly turned it over to investigators after believing it could show Wells. Metadata reviewed by the outlet reportedly indicates the footage was recorded at approximately 2:23 p.m. on July 4.

Investigators believe Wells was last seen around 3 p.m. speaking with a girl on the island. GPS information from the boat that brought Wells and his friends to Horn Island reportedly shows it departed around 4:30 p.m. without him.

Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter previously said: "From what we understand, he chose to stay there." Alongside the official investigation, Wells' family has launched its own independent inquiry into his death.

Nolan Wells funeral

Nolan Wells was laid to rest on Monday during a funeral attended by family members, friends and prominent public figures, including Rev. Al Sharpton, filmmaker Spike Lee and former NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens.

His mother, Christine Wonsley, remembered her son as compassionate, kind and deeply loved.

"If you ever had the privilege of meeting our son Nolan or calling him a friend, then you experienced a glimpse of God's love through him."

Addressing mourners, attorney Ben Crump vowed to continue seeking answers. "We are on a ferocious search for the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God."

For now, the mystery surrounding Nolan Wells' Horn Island body remains unresolved as investigators await official autopsy results and continue piecing together what happened during his final hours.
