The images were taken by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) on August 11 and 12, six days after the spacecraft first had an opportunity to pass over the impact site. Scientists estimate that the newly formed crater is about 60 feet (18 metres) across and less than 10 feet deep.
The impact occurred on August 5, when the upper stage of a Falcon 9 struck the lunar surface after spending months in space.
NASA had only seconds to capture the crater
Getting a clear picture of the impact site was far more complicated than simply pointing a camera at the Moon.NASA said the LRO had to wait for the target area to rotate into the spacecraft’s field of view. Once the opportunity arrived, the orbiter also needed to be positioned at precisely the right angle to photograph the crater while travelling roughly 60 miles above the surface.
That alignment took six days to achieve.
Even after NASA had the spacecraft in position, timing was critical. The agency said a delay or early command of just 10 seconds could have caused the intended location to move roughly 10 miles away from the centre of the image.
The successful photographs were taken from different viewing angles, allowing scientists to identify details around the freshly created crater that are difficult to see from a single perspective.
What NASA found around the SpaceX impact site
The photographs reveal a pattern of light and dark material spreading outward from the crater.NASA scientists say the darker streaks consist largely of lunar dust and rocks that have been altered over extremely long periods by exposure to the solar wind, cosmic radiation and repeated impacts from tiny space rocks.
The force of the Falcon 9 stage striking the Moon disturbed that older material, sending it outward from the impact point.
Brighter material can also be seen close to the crater's edge. According to NASA, these lighter streaks are made up of relatively fresh material excavated from below the Moon's weathered surface.
The contrast provides scientists with an opportunity to study both the immediate effects of the collision and material that had remained buried beneath the lunar surface.
SpaceX rocket had launched a lunar mission
The Falcon 9 upper stage did not begin its journey with the intention of crashing into the Moon.It was launched in January 2025 carrying Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost 1 lunar lander, a private mission that later successfully completed a soft landing on the Moon.
After completing its role in the mission, the rocket stage remained on a trajectory that ultimately brought it into contact with the lunar surface.
The August 5 impact created a new geological feature on the Moon and gave researchers an unusual opportunity to observe how a human-made object can alter the surface of another world.
South Korea captured the first images
NASA's photographs are not the first views of the crash site.South Korea's Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter, better known as Danuri, photographed the area on August 6, one day after the impact. The Korean space agency subsequently released those images.
The later NASA observations provide additional perspectives and help scientists examine the crater in greater detail.
The collaboration between the two space agencies also played an important role in locating and documenting the impact.
How NASA and South Korea found the crash site
Identifying the precise location of the impact required cooperation between scientists on Earth and teams operating spacecraft around the Moon.NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies worked to progressively narrow down the Falcon 9 stage's expected trajectory until researchers could determine the likely impact location.
Those coordinates were shared with the Korean lunar mission.
The Danuri team then supplied its own location information to NASA's LRO team, helping researchers refine the sequence for the spacecraft's follow-up observations.
That exchange ultimately helped NASA point the LRO's camera at the right patch of lunar terrain during its brief imaging opportunity.
LRO continues to map the Moon
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has been studying the Moon since 2009 and remains one of the agency's key tools for examining the lunar surface.The spacecraft travels around the Moon from pole to pole, completing an orbit in roughly two hours as the lunar surface rotates beneath it.
Its ability to repeatedly survey the Moon makes the LRO particularly valuable for identifying changes on the surface, including newly formed impact sites.
The latest photographs of the SpaceX rocket crater offer another example of that capability. What might have been a fleeting collision has now become a measurable feature that scientists can study from orbit.
For NASA and its international partners, the effort also demonstrates how precisely timed observations and cooperation between lunar missions can turn an unexpected impact into a valuable scientific opportunity.
