Netflix, Sony making sequel of KPop Demon Hunters? Here's what we know so far

Netflix and Sony Pictures are reportedly making a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, the animated musical that has become one of Netflix’s biggest global hits. While no official agreement has been finalized, industry reports suggest early discussions are underway following the film’s record-breaking success.

Released on June 20, 2025, KPop Demon Hunters quickly rose to become Netflix’s most-watched English-language movie, racking up 236 million views. The film also set a milestone by becoming the streamer’s first title to reach the No. 1 spot at the global box office, thanks in part to its sold-out “Sing-Along” edition, which generated an estimated $19.2 million in U.S. theaters over a single weekend.

Originally produced by Sony Pictures Animation, the movie was handed over to Netflix instead of going for a traditional theatrical rollout. Under the deal, Netflix funded the $100 million production budget and paid an additional $25 million fee. Sony, however, continues to benefit financially through soundtrack sales, publishing rights, and its animation unit Imageworks, which worked on the project.

What to expect from the sequel

The film’s breakout success has sparked speculation about expanding the story. Director Maggie Kang has hinted that the sequel could delve deeper into the origins and backstories of the demon-hunting K-pop idols. “We wanted to introduce the world with a non-origin origin story,” Kang was quoted as saying, noting that many details about the characters’ pasts were intentionally left out of the first film. “The sequel would be a chance to explore who these girls are, how they were chosen, and the journeys that shaped them.”

The film’s music has been another driving force behind its popularity. The soundtrack made history by placing four songs simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 10 — including HUNTR/X’s Golden, which climbed to No. 1 on August 16.

For now, a follow-up remains in the planning stage. Whether Kang and the original creative team will return is still unclear, but given the film’s phenomenal reception, Netflix and Sony may see little reason to let this franchise go.
