Netflix has increased subscription prices in Australia by about 10%, adding $2–$3 a month to its plans — just a year after its last hike.

The Standard with Ads plan now costs $9.99 per month, up from $7.99. The Standard plan has risen to $20.99 from $18.99, while Premium subscribers face the steepest increase, paying $28.99 instead of $25.99.

Extra member fees have also climbed. Adding a member with ads now costs $6.99 per month (up from $5.99), while ad-free extra members will pay $8.99 (up from $7.99).

Compared with early 2024, when the cheapest Netflix plan cost $6.99, today’s rates mark a 43% increase for Standard with Ads and a 25% jump for ad-free subscriptions in just over a year.

Profit soars 45%

The latest hike comes after Netflix posted stronger-than-expected results for the second quarter, with profit jumping 45% year-on-year to $3.1 billion. Revenue for the three months ending June 30 rose 16% to $11.1 billion, surpassing both analyst forecasts and the company’s own guidance. The streaming giant credited higher subscription prices and a rapidly growing advertising business for the gains.

The company raised its 2025 revenue outlook to between $44.8 billion and $45.2 billion, up from $43.5–$44.5 billion. Content also played a key role in the quarter’s success. The third season of Squid Game racked up 122 million views, becoming Netflix’s sixth-biggest season ever in just a few weeks. Other hits included Ginny & Georgia Season 3 (53 million views), Sirens (56 million views), and the animated film KPop Demon Hunters (80 million views), which became one of Netflix’s top animated releases and produced a chart-topping soundtrack.

Korean content continued to dominate globally, reinforcing Netflix’s strategy of investing heavily in international programming. Looking ahead, Netflix is banking on a blockbuster second half of 2025 with the return of Wednesday Season 2, the final season of Stranger Things, and new films from Kathryn Bigelow and Guillermo del Toro. The company also plans to expand live programming with major boxing matches and NFL games.

Investor confidence remains strong, with Netflix shares up more than 40% year-to-date. The growth follows a crackdown on password sharing and a pivot toward ad-supported plans. The company had more than 300 million subscribers as of December last year, adding 19 million in the holiday quarter alone. However, it no longer reports subscriber counts, focusing instead on engagement metrics like viewing time.

Netflix expects ad revenue to nearly double in 2025 and is targeting $9 billion annually from ad-based subscriptions by 2030.
