The ambitious race to extend the life of one of NASA’s most productive space telescopes has officially ended.

NASA and space startup Katalyst Space Technologies have called off an experimental in-orbit servicing mission designed to save the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory.

Launched in 2004 to study gamma-ray bursts, black holes, and cosmic explosions, the veteran telescope is rapidly losing altitude due to atmospheric drag.


The decision to abandon docking maneuvers follows persistent attitude-control failures on board Katalyst’s Link servicing vehicle. The technical issues rendered a safe rendezvous impossible, leaving the aging observatory on track for atmospheric re-entry.

How solar storms dragged swift down

Swift’s trajectory was severely impacted by heightened solar activity from the solar maximum. Increased solar energy expands Earth’s upper atmosphere, significantly boosting orbital drag on spacecraft operating in low Earth orbit.

Swift's altitude dropped to approximately 216 miles (347 kilometers), placing it on a terminal downward path.

To prevent the loss of the telescope, NASA awarded Katalyst Space Technologies a contract to deploy the Link spacecraft under an accelerated timeline. Launched aboard a Pegasus XL rocket released from a carrier aircraft, Link was designed to dock with Swift and use its propulsion systems to boost the observatory into a higher, stable orbit.

System anomalies onboard

The mission ran into critical issues when Link lost attitude control in orbit. An anomaly investigation revealed compounding component failures across the craft.

A hard power bus reset led to temperature spikes in control electronics, disabling two of Link's three reaction wheels. The spacecraft began to tumble, causing communications interruptions and degradation in its cold-gas thruster system.

Ground controllers managed to reduce the spin rate using gimballed electric thrusters, but precise pointing control could not be restored. Faced with the risk of an accidental collision that could shatter insulation and create dangerous orbital debris, mission managers canceled the docking attempt.

What lies ahead

Although the rescue mission failed, Katalyst plans to maintain proximity operations near Swift to collect operational data on rendezvous maneuvers. These technical insights will help refine autonomous rendezvous techniques for future satellite-servicing platforms.

Meanwhile, Swift's operators have oriented the spacecraft into a low-drag configuration to slow its descent as much as possible. With no secondary rescue option available, the telescope is expected to make an uncontrolled atmospheric re-entry and burn up later this year.
