Popular YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast, has pledged a reward of $100,000 to anyone who can provide information leading to the conviction of scammers who impersonated his charity project, Team Water. The fraudsters deceived Swedish entrepreneur Erik Bergman, stripping him of $1.25 million in what now appears to be a sophisticated charity-based crypto con.

Bergman, founder of Great.com—a platform that funds charities through casino affiliate earnings—was among the early and enthusiastic backers of MrBeast’s Team Water initiative. Launched on August 1, 2025, the campaign aimed to raise $40 million to provide clean water in underserved communities. Inspired by the cause, Bergman promised a $1 million contribution, a commitment MrBeast himself acknowledged publicly on X (formerly Twitter). Unfortunately, this pledge opened the door for fraudsters posing as representatives of the campaign.

How MrBeast got conned

The scammers approached Bergman, claiming to be members of Team Water. They invited him on a supposed trip to Africa to witness water wells being built alongside celebrities and influencers. To bolster credibility, they impersonated figures like Mark Rober and Adin Ross, presenting themselves as investors and crypto executives.

The fraud escalated when someone pretending to be MrBeast promoted a partnership with a cryptocurrency exchange. Bergman was persuaded to invest in a new token, first sending $500,000, followed by another $750,000, after being convinced that other wealthy donors were doing the same and that the token’s value had already risen.

Doubts crept in when Bergman noticed inconsistencies, such as the use of a British phone number by a U.S.-based influencer. His suspicions were confirmed during a genuine call with MrBeast, which left him describing the revelation as a “punch in the stomach.”

MrBeast’s Response

Outraged, MrBeast publicly condemned the scheme and vowed to protect the reputation of Team Water. He promised a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those behind the scam.

The incident highlights the growing risk of impersonation scams targeting philanthropic ventures. While Bergman’s loss is significant, his decision to share his experience may serve as a cautionary tale, warning donors and creators alike to remain vigilant against fraud in the digital age.
