Kathmandu, Nepal – Mingma G Sherpa, a Nepali mountaineer, received an award on Friday for becoming the first Nepali to climb all 14 peaks over 8,000 meters without supplemental oxygen. He reached the summit of Shishapangma (8,027 meters) in Tibet in October 2024, completing his goal.

Arun Kumar Chaudhary, Nepal's Minister of State for Tourism, Culture, and Civil Aviation, presented the award at an event organized by the Nepal Mountaineering Association. Mingma, 38, from the Rolwaling Rural Municipality in the Dolakha district, first climbed Mount Everest in 2007.

A mountain guide and owner of the mountaineering agency Imagine Nepal, Mingma has climbed Everest six times. His other accomplishments include climbing K2 five times and reaching the summits of Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Manaslu (seven times).

“Being a citizen of a mountainous country Nepal, I ventured to complete 14 eight thousanders without oxygen cylinders to enhance the prestige of my country in the international arena,” he said.

Mingma requested the government create a permanent rescue team to help climbers in emergencies, promoting mountain tourism and protecting Sherpa lives.
