Michael Dell started his billion-dollar journey in a UT Austin dorm room in 1984; now he and Susan are giving $750 million to build an AI medical campus

Michael Dell’s connection with the University of Texas at Austin goes back to a dorm room in 1984, where he started the company that would eventually become a global technology giant. More than four decades later, that same university is at the center of one of his biggest philanthropic bets yet, with Dell and his wife, Susan Dell, donating $750 million to create a new AI-focused medical center and research campus.

The gift takes the couple’s total contributions to UT Austin to more than $1 billion, turning a personal chapter from Dell’s early life into a lasting philanthropic legacy. The planned UT Dell Medical Center is expected to open in 2030 and will anchor a new research campus spanning more than 300 acres in Austin.

Michael Dell’s connection to the University of Texas

The donation also has a deeply personal connection for Michael Dell.

In 1984, Dell started building his computer business from a dorm room at the University of Texas at Austin. He had initially enrolled as a premed student before turning his attention toward computers and eventually building Dell into a global technology company.

He ultimately left the university without completing his degree. Now, the dorm room where his company began is set to be renamed “Dell House” in his honor.

The university says the Dells’ journey from a dorm-room startup to major philanthropic supporters has become part of their broader legacy at UT Austin.

Michael and Susan Dell’s $750 million vision for healthcare

The new campus is being designed around the idea that AI could fundamentally change how healthcare is delivered. The medical center is expected to include a hospital with roughly 300 to 500 beds, outpatient facilities and a full-service emergency department. It will also connect medical education and research with advanced computing capabilities.

The research side will focus on using AI and computing to improve areas such as early disease detection, diagnosis and personalized treatment. The University of Texas describes the project as a digitally enabled health system powered by data, AI and innovation, with the goal of bringing together clinical care, research and medical education.

For Austin, the project could also fill a major gap. UT officials have described Austin as the largest U.S. city that previously lacked a comprehensive academic medical center.

The Dell couple’s philanthropy is bigger than one medical center

The $750 million commitment is not limited to the hospital. The Dells’ latest investment will also support undergraduate scholarships, student housing and the Texas Advanced Computing Center, which is developing major academic supercomputing capabilities.

“What makes this moment so meaningful is the opportunity to build something that brings every part of the journey together—from how students learn, to how discoveries are made, to how care reaches families,” the Dell couple said in a statement.

Their support for UT Austin has already extended across scholarships, capital projects and academic programs, helping strengthen the university’s technology, research and medical ambitions.

Dell has previously spoken about the importance of taking risks and learning from failure.

“You have to embrace risk, and you have to accept failure. If you want to really make it big, you’d better come up with something unique.”

From a dorm room to more than $1 billion in giving

The latest donation means the Dells have now crossed a symbolic milestone at the university: more than $1 billion in total giving to UT Austin. Their newest commitment is also among the largest philanthropic gifts ever made to a U.S. university, according to UT Austin.

The university is establishing the UT Dell Campus for Advanced Research alongside the medical center, with the goal of bringing together medicine, science, computing and AI. The broader ambition is to make Austin a major destination for health and life-sciences innovation.

The $6.25 billion donation that came before it

The couple's latest philanthropic move comes after another extraordinary commitment. In December 2025, Michael and Susan Dell pledged $6.25 billion to help fund “Trump Accounts” for as many as 25 million American children.

The Dells committed to putting $250 into investment accounts for eligible children, particularly children aged 10 and under who were born before the federal program's qualifying birth period. The initiative was designed to expand access to the new tax-advantaged children's investment accounts.

The size of that pledge made it one of the most unusual large-scale philanthropic commitments aimed at children.

Referencing the Trump Accounts donation, the Dells said in a previous interview: “It’s certainly the largest gift we will have given." They also indicated that more philanthropic plans could follow.
