MacKenzie Scott has given away 5 times more than Jeff Bezos despite his $280 billion net worth, 8x greater fortune and 13x more Amazon stock

MacKenzie Scott has given away roughly five times more money than her ex-husband Jeff Bezos, even though Bezos has a $280 billion net worth, making him about eight times wealthier than Scott. He also owns nearly 13 times more Amazon stock than his...

Mackenzie Scott has emerged as one of the world's most prominent philanthropists, donating on a scale that has few precedents among billionaires
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott may have gone their separate ways, but their fortunes remain closely tied to the company they built together. The former couple were both instrumental in Amazon’s early years, with Bezos founding the company in 1994 and Scott joining as one of its earliest employees.

Today, however, their approaches to philanthropy look strikingly different. Bezos has a fortune of around $280 billion, while Scott is worth approximately $34 billion despite giving away tens of billions of dollars.

Jeff Bezos has a fortune of around $280 billion

According to SEC filings analysed by Luxurylaunches, Bezos, 62, owns approximately 879.74 million Amazon shares. The Amazon founder has also committed substantial sums to philanthropy. In 2020, he announced a $10 billion commitment to the Bezos Earth Fund, aimed at supporting efforts to address climate change and protect nature.

So far, the Bezos Earth Fund has distributed approximately $2.4 billion. Jeff Bezos also owns the $500 million Koru yacht, adding to a portfolio of high-value assets that reflects his enormous wealth.

MacKenzie Scott received about 139 million Amazon shares

Scott's financial position changed dramatically following her 2019 divorce from Bezos. As part of the settlement, she received approximately 139 million Amazon shares, equivalent to roughly a 4% stake in the company, according to SEC filings cited by Luxurylaunches.

At the time of the divorce, Scott's net worth was estimated at between $36 billion and $38 billion. Since then, however, she has sold or given away a substantial portion of the Amazon shares she received.

Scott has given away almost $27 billion

Scott has emerged as one of the world's most prominent philanthropists, donating on a scale that has few precedents among billionaires. So far, the author and philanthropist has given away almost $27 billion to more than 2,500 organizations.

Her giving has continued at an extraordinary pace. In 2025 alone, Scott donated $7.2 billion, according to the figures cited in the report. Despite those donations, she remains worth roughly $34 billion.

That means Scott's fortune today is still close to where it stood shortly after her divorce, even after she gave away tens of billions of dollars.

Bezos and Scott have taken very different approaches to giving

The difference becomes particularly striking when their fortunes and donations are compared. Bezos is worth roughly eight times as much as Scott, while also holding significantly more Amazon stock. Yet Scott has given away substantially more money.

According to the figures cited, Scott has donated roughly five times more than Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos have donated over their lifetimes, based on Forbes' calculations.

The comparison highlights the very different pace at which the two billionaires have approached philanthropy.

Scott's fortune remains remarkably resilient

Scott's ability to give away billions while retaining a fortune of around $34 billion has been helped by the enormous value of the assets she received through the Amazon divorce settlement.

She has also continued to distribute large sums without appearing to significantly slow the pace of her giving. Bezos, meanwhile, has directed billions toward the Bezos Earth Fund, but the amount distributed so far remains considerably smaller than Scott's lifetime giving.
