Mac mini vs Mac Studio: Why Apple’s new M5 Ultra machine is built for the AI era

Apple’s latest Mac Studio arrives at a moment when artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly demanding on computer hardware.

With the new M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips, and memory configurations reaching as high as 512GB, Apple is making a clear pitch to developers, researchers and creative professionals who want to run sophisticated AI workloads directly on their own machines.

For many users, the announcement also raises an obvious question: how does the new Mac Studio compare with Apple’s far smaller and more affordable Mac mini? While both are compact desktop Macs, they are designed for very different levels of performance and workloads.


The new Mac Studio is available to pre-order from August 25 and will begin reaching customers and stores on September 22.

The M5 Max model starts at $2,499 in the US, while the M5 Ultra starts at $5,499. Apple says the 512GB unified-memory configuration will arrive later in October.

Apple shifts the Mac Studio conversation toward local AI

The new Mac Studio is built around the idea that some of the most demanding AI tasks no longer have to happen in the cloud.

Apple has equipped the machine with its M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips, adding Neural Accelerators directly to the GPU and dramatically increasing the amount of unified memory available. At the top end, the M5 Ultra version can be configured with up to 512GB of unified memory, allowing users to run very large language models locally rather than relying entirely on remote computing services.

For developers and businesses working with AI, that could mean greater control over data, fewer concerns about token limits and less dependence on potentially rising cloud-computing costs. Apple says the M5 Ultra delivers up to 4.3 times the peak AI compute performance of the previous M3 Ultra, while the M5 Max offers up to 3.9 times faster AI performance than its predecessor.

M5 Ultra pushes the Mac Studio into workstation territory

The most powerful version of the new Mac Studio comes with an up-to-36-core CPU and an up-to-80-core GPU. Apple has also increased memory bandwidth to as much as 1.2TB/s.

Those specifications are aimed at users dealing with workloads far beyond everyday desktop computing. Apple is targeting AI researchers, data scientists, VFX artists and filmmakers who need to process large models, complex simulations or high-resolution video without moving every task to a data centre.

The machine can also handle up to 33 streams of 8K ProRes 422 video at 30 frames per second, underlining that the Mac Studio remains a workstation for traditional creative professionals as much as it is a bet on AI.

The difference becomes especially clear when comparing the Mac Studio with the Mac mini. Apple’s smaller desktop is built around a balance of size, price and performance, while the Mac Studio is designed to push Apple silicon into workstation-level territory, with significantly higher memory limits, greater graphics capability and more extensive connectivity.

The M5 Max offers a more accessible entry point

Users who do not need the extreme specifications of the M5 Ultra can opt for the M5 Max model.

That version features an 18-core CPU, an up-to-40-core GPU and up to 128GB of unified memory. Apple says it is designed for software engineers, photographers, musicians, designers and other professionals working with graphics, video and AI-powered tools.

Apple is also promising faster performance for tasks such as large language model processing and text-to-image generation, alongside improvements in 3D rendering and video editing.

The Mac mini, meanwhile, remains the more practical choice for users who want a capable Apple desktop without stepping into workstation-level pricing. The Mac Studio is aimed at those whose workloads demand considerably more memory and computing power, particularly for large AI models, advanced video production, 3D graphics and other intensive tasks.

Multiple Mac Studios can work together

One of the more unusual features of the new model is the ability to link multiple Mac Studio systems for distributed AI inference.

Using Thunderbolt 5 and remote direct memory access, Apple says users can create a shared memory pool across several machines. A cluster of four Mac Studio systems can deliver up to three times the AI inference performance of a single system, according to the company.

The approach could appeal to research teams and businesses that need more computing power but want to scale locally instead of immediately turning to large cloud infrastructure.

Faster connections and storage round out the upgrade

Apple has also updated the connectivity package with Thunderbolt 5, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.

Thunderbolt 5 supports transfer speeds of up to 120Gb/s, while the new Mac Studio can support up to eight displays. Apple says storage performance is up to twice as fast as before, which could matter when users are moving large video projects or loading huge AI models.

Mac mini vs Mac Studio: which Apple desktop is built for you?

The choice between the Mac mini and Mac Studio largely comes down to the type of work being done. The Mac mini is likely to remain the better fit for users who need a compact desktop for everyday productivity, coding and creative work. The Mac Studio is built for professionals who need far more headroom as projects and workloads become increasingly demanding.

With up to 512GB of unified memory, the M5 Ultra Mac Studio occupies a category the Mac mini does not attempt to reach. For users working with large AI models, high-resolution video or complex graphics, that extra capacity could be the deciding factor.

Apple's latest Mac Studio is therefore less of a replacement for the Mac mini and more of a machine designed for users who have outgrown the limits of a conventional compact desktop.

As AI development increasingly shifts towards running larger models locally, Apple appears to be positioning the Mac Studio as its most powerful answer to that growing demand.
