Luigi Nicholas Mangione apparently was living a charmed life: the grandson of a wealthy real estate developer, valedictorian of his elite Baltimore prep school and with degrees from one of the nation's top private universities.
Investigators say the words "deny", "defend" and "depose" were written on shell casings found at the scene of Brian Thompson's murder. Law enforcement sources say this may be a reference to the "three Ds of insurance" - tactics used by companies to reject payment claims by patients, according to BBC.

Luigi Mangione's social media posts go viral
Amid his arrest for the murder of UHC CEO Brian Thompson, spotlight is also on his social media posts. Mangione’s trail on the internet hinted at pain both physical and philosophical.In January, he shared a quote from Indian philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti about the dangers of becoming “well-adjusted to a profoundly sick society.” One of Mangione’s favorite quotes, listed on GoodReads, was, “It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society,” from Jiddu Krishnamurti, the religious philosopher and teacher, reports NYT.
An X account linked to Mangione also includes recent posts about the negative impact of smartphones on children; healthy eating and exercise habits; psychological theories.

What Luigi Mangione wrote about US healthcare system

Who is Luigi Mangione?
Born into a wealthy family in the US state of Maryland, Luigi Mangione graduated from an elite all-boys private institution, the Gilman School, as high school valedictorian in 2016. Mangione then attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating from the Ivy League school in 2020 with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science and a minor in mathematics.Mangione comes from a prominent family in the Baltimore area who are known for businesses including country clubs, nursing homes and a radio station according to local media. Mangione, who developed a game app as a teenager, worked as a “data engineer” at a vehicle shopping firm called TrueCar from November 2020, according to his LinkedIn profile. A TrueCar spokesperson said that he had not worked there since 2023.

Mangione lived in Hawaii according to his X account, where he regularly posted about technological advances like artificial intelligence, fitness and healthy living.
He also spent time in a co-living surfing community in Hawaii called Surfbreak. Sarah Nehemiah, who knew him then, told CBS he left due to his back injury, which had worsened from surfing and hiking.
