The largest blaze has consumed nearly 20,000 acres in Pacific Palisades, while another near Altadena has scorched 13,700 acres. Firefighters have reported partial containment of the Pacific Palisades fire, but the return of strong winds and the outbreak of new fires remain significant challenges. Late Thursday, a fire near Calabasas and Hidden Hills quickly grew to almost 1,000 acres, bringing the total number of displaced residents to over 180,000.
President Joe Biden has pledged federal aid to support California, describing the wildfires as the state’s “most… devastating fire.” Firefighting aircraft, grounded earlier in the week due to high winds, resumed operations on Thursday. The wildfire has also caused widespread disruption, with school closures, power outages, and event cancellations. Even an NFL playoff game was relocated due to the crisis.
