A still from the original LOTR movies
Film maker Peter Jackson has confirmed that the earlier announced 'Lord of the Rings: The Shadow of the Past' is in the scriptwriting stage. The update comes as a big relief for billions of LOTR fans as earlier reports claimed that the project might have hit a snag. Jackson also said that The Hunt for Gollum is almost finished filming. "I think there are about two weeks of shooting left," he said during the Sitges Film Festival.

The Shadow of the Past was first officially announced on 25 March, 2026. However, later reports claimed that the movie was put on hold following Paramount Skydance's $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. Some reports claimed that "the new regime wants to see how well The Hunt for Gollum performs before letting The Shadow of the Past proceed". However, Jackson's latest comments confirms that the film hasn't been canceled.

What we know about The Shadow of the Past

“The Shadow of the Past” is the second chapter of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, which the author described as “the crucial chapter” as it marks a turning point in the story, revealing the central plot that Tolkien had developed and making Frodo Baggins and the reader realise that the One Ring must be destroyed. The chapter shifts the narrative away from the light-hearted celebrations of the opening chapter to a darker, more serious tone. It also introduces some of the book’s central themes, including the weight of history, the Ring’s corrupting power, and the complex relationship between providence, free will and predestination.

However, according to reports, 'The Shadow of the Past' movie will adapt six chapters from Tolkein's The Fellowship of the Ring that did not make it into Jackson's movie adaptation. It will follow the Hobbits as they leave the Shire, meet the mysterious Tom Bombadil, and travel through the dangerous Barrow-downs. The movie will pick material from "Three is Company" to "Fog on the Barrow-downs" chapters that was left out of Peter Jackson's original films. The framing story is set fourteen years after Frodo's departure, when Sam, Merry, and Pippin retrace the early steps of that journey while Elanor, Sam's daughter, investigates events related to the beginning of the War of the Ring.

Earlier reports claimed that Colbert is writing The Shadow of the Past alongside Philippa Boyens and his son, Peter McGee. No release date or cast details are available now.
