King Charles and Queen Camilla release 2024 Christmas card amid health concerns
King Charles III and Queen Camilla have released their official Christmas card for 2024, marking a season of optimism after a challenging year. The photograph, taken earlier this year in Buckingham Palace Gardens, reflects the monarch’s recovery f...

The timing of the card is significant, coming nearly nine months after Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles had been diagnosed with cancer during a “routine hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement.” The diagnosis led the monarch to step back from public duties to undergo treatment. However, Buckingham Palace reassured the public that King Charles remained “optimistic” about his treatment and was eager to return to his royal responsibilities. A statement from the Palace at the time read: "The King is in good spirits and is looking forward to continuing his royal duties as soon as possible."
By April 2024, King Charles was able to resume his royal engagements, marking the start of his return to public life. His first major public appearance following his treatment was a visit to a cancer treatment centre, where he met with patients and medical staff. In June 2024, King Charles and Queen Camilla also hosted a significant diplomatic event, welcoming the Emperor and Empress of Japan for a State Visit.
The 2024 Christmas card is notable for its more casual tone compared to last year’s festive greeting. The card from 2023 showed the couple standing in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace, shortly after King Charles’s coronation, with the King wearing the Imperial State Crown and Queen Camilla adorned in Queen Mary's Crown. In contrast, this year’s photograph, taken in the relaxed setting of the Palace’s gardens, is seen as a reflection of the King’s recovery and the return to normalcy for the royal family.
Buckingham Palace also expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support the couple received from around the world during what has been a challenging year. A statement accompanying the Christmas card read: "Their Majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year."
Since Charles became King in May 2023, after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, the royal family has faced multiple challenges. However, King Charles and Queen Camilla have remained committed to their roles, with both continuing to engage in royal events and public engagements.
Senior members of the royal family, including the King and Queen, traditionally release a Christmas card that is sent to family, friends, world leaders, and organisations. This year, Buckingham Palace will send out approximately 2,700 cards, each personally signed by King Charles and Queen Camilla. The card serves as both a personal message from the royal couple and a symbol of their continued service despite the trials they have faced.
As the royal family looks ahead to the new year, attention will also turn to other festive traditions, including the Christmas card from Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales. The Wales family has also been active recently, with Prince William attending a significant event in France to celebrate the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, and Princess Catherine hosting her annual Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey.
