Although Jeff Bezos remains chairman of the Bezos Earth Fund, Lauren Sánchez, its vice chair, has increasingly emerged as a public face of the family's environmental philanthropy.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos made one of the biggest philanthropic commitments to climate change and nature in 2020 when he pledged $10 billion to the Bezos Earth Fund. Six years later, the massive fund continues to roll out investments across climate, conservation and urban green spaces, with Bezos’ wife, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, playing an increasingly visible role in deciding where the money goes.

In July this year, Lauren Sánchez announced a $100 million investment in eight US cities through the Bezos Earth Fund’s Greening America’s Cities program. The initiative aims to transform underused urban land into parks, green spaces, wildlife habitats and community gathering places. The announcement was made on July 7, 2026.

The Bezos Earth Fund said the projects will include native trees and plants, new parks, urban wildlife habitats and recreational amenities. Individual projects were selected with input from local communities.

Lauren Sánchez described the broader goal as turning cities “from gray to green.” “Today, the @bezosearthfund is announcing a $100 million investment in eight U.S. cities to transform underused spaces into parks, gathering places, and green community hubs where people can connect and thrive.”

The July announcement represented the second round of funding under the Greening America’s Cities program. With the latest grants, the program had deployed $150 million across 11 cities, toward a broader goal of investing $400 million in urban green spaces.

Why the Bezos Earth Fund matters

Bezos established the Bezos Earth Fund in 2020 with a $10 billion commitment to address climate change and protect nature. The money was intended to be distributed by 2030, making the fund one of the most closely watched philanthropic efforts in the climate space.

Its investments have extended beyond urban parks, covering areas including conservation, climate science, sustainable agriculture, habitat restoration and other environmental initiatives.

The fund's remaining commitment also gives it several years to continue making large-scale grants before the 2030 deadline.

Lauren Sánchez Bezos has become a prominent face of the fund

Although Jeff Bezos remains chairman of the Bezos Earth Fund, Lauren Sánchez, its vice chair, has increasingly emerged as a public face of the family's environmental philanthropy.

Her role has included announcing investments in areas ranging from ocean conservation to artificial intelligence and climate solutions.

The July urban greening announcement is notable because its impact is designed to be visible at the neighborhood level, with vacant or overlooked land being converted into spaces where residents can walk, gather, play and connect with nature.

The eight cities will get different types of projects

The projects are not identical across the eight cities. In Los Angeles, for example, the funding will support the transformation of underused space around the Watts Towers Arts Center into a five-acre park and arts and cultural campus.

In Indianapolis, funding will help transform 25 acres of underused land along the White River into a park with trails, wetlands, trees, recreation areas, a community farm and orchard.

In Sioux Falls, a former industrial quarry will be redeveloped into a 16.3-acre park with trails, open spaces and access to the water. The Bezos Earth Fund says the projects are expected to open gradually over the coming years.

Bezos Earth Fund has backed other major climate initiatives

The $100 million urban investment is just one part of the fund's broader climate strategy.

The Bezos Earth Fund has also committed money toward ocean protection, wildfire detection and prevention, sustainable materials, climate technology and other environmental projects.

Lauren Sánchez has also announced major initiatives involving artificial intelligence and climate and nature solutions, highlighting the fund's interest in using emerging technologies to tackle environmental challenges.
