A Texas homeowner says a 23.2-kilowatt rooftop solar system has not only been fully paid off, but has also helped build up an electric account balance of roughly $7,000 in the negative.

The system originally started at 18.48 kilowatts when it was installed in October 2022 and eventually grew to 23.2 kilowatts. The homeowner says the entire installation cost $48,000 — an investment they managed to pay off.

“I got my solar installed in October of 2022. It was an 18.48 kw system that I eventually added on to myself and rested at 23.2 kw(You’d better believe that’s not where I’m stopping though, I think I have an addiction). All in I paid $48k and I successfully paid it off on Friday! Was is worth it? Yes, 100%. The unusual energy plan helped

One of the biggest factors in the homeowner's experience was a free-nights electricity plan, which covered electricity usage between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.

“Keep in mind everything from 9pm to 7am is FREE!” the homeowner wrote. “Seriously, the free nights plans here are awesome!”

That arrangement matters because solar economics depend on much more than the panels themselves. Electricity rates, utility rules, net-metering or export policies, financing, incentives and the timing of household consumption can all dramatically change how quickly a system pays for itself.

The homeowner also credited referral bonuses as part of the reason they were able to pay off the system.

The system couldn't simply keep getting bigger

There was another limitation: the local utility imposed a 25-kilowatt AC cap on the installation.

That kind of restriction can determine how much solar a homeowner is actually allowed to connect to the grid, regardless of how much electricity the household uses. Commenters from North Texas reported encountering similar system-size limitations tied to local grid rules.

And there may be another wrinkle for people trying to replicate this particular setup.

Some commenters noted that certain free-nights electricity plans may no longer be available to customers with rooftop solar. If that's the case, homeowners who installed earlier could have benefited from terms that aren't necessarily available to new solar customers today.

Solar isn't automatically a $48,000 win

The story is a good example of why there isn't a single answer to whether rooftop solar "pays off."

A large system can produce substantial savings for a household with high electricity consumption, but the economics depend heavily on local electricity prices and utility policies. The same $48,000 system could have a very different payback period somewhere else.

Homeowners also need to account for installation costs, financing, available tax incentives, electricity rates and what happens to excess power sent back to the grid.

Battery storage can further change the calculation. A battery can store excess solar energy for later use, provide backup power during outages and potentially reduce reliance on expensive grid electricity.

The bigger lesson

The Texas homeowner's experience shows that the panels are only one part of the equation.

A favorable electricity plan, local incentives, utility rules and the ability to match solar production with household consumption can make a surprisingly large difference.

For someone considering solar today, the important question isn't simply "How many panels should I install?" It's "What will the entire energy setup look like under my local rules and rates?"

That includes comparing installer quotes, checking available incentives, understanding how excess solar is compensated and reading the fine print of the electricity plan.

In this homeowner's case, the combination of a 23.2-kilowatt system, a $48,000 investment, referral bonuses and free overnight electricity produced an unusually favorable result.

But it's precisely those details that make the story difficult to reproduce everywhere — and worth examining before signing a solar contract.
