Europe’s farming calendar is changing rapidly as rising temperatures push major crops to maturity weeks earlier than they did at the beginning of the century. But the earlier harvests are masking a much bigger problem: extreme heat and prolonged drought are damaging yields across some of the continent’s most important agricultural regions.

The warning is particularly stark for maize.

France’s agriculture ministry expects grain maize production to fall by about 35% from last year, while analysts say the decline could be significantly deeper. Some forecasts point to French output falling to its lowest level since 1976, when the country was hit by another severe summer weather crisis.


The wider European Union is also facing a sharp decline. The European Commission estimates the bloc’s 2026 maize harvest at around 50.1 million tonnes, which would be close to a 20-year low and roughly one-fifth below the recent average.

Europe’s crops are reaching maturity weeks earlier

The change is visible well beyond maize fields.

European Commission data shows winter wheat in some parts of the EU reached maturity as much as 20 days earlier than in 2000, with similar shifts recorded for rapeseed and maize.

For farmers, that means harvesting seasons that once began in August or September are increasingly starting earlier.

In Bavaria, farmer representative Hermann Greif said maize harvesting that traditionally got underway around the middle of September has now shifted closer to the beginning of the month. Wheat, meanwhile, can now be harvested in late July in years when temperatures accelerate crop development.

The science behind the shift is relatively straightforward.

Plants require a certain accumulation of heat to move through different stages of development. When temperatures rise, that accumulated heat is reached faster, shortening the crop's growing cycle.

But reaching maturity earlier does not necessarily mean producing more food.

The hidden cost of an earlier harvest

For crops exposed to drought during critical growth stages, the faster development can become a serious disadvantage.

A plant may reach maturity earlier, but if it has spent crucial weeks under extreme heat without enough water, the resulting grain can be smaller and yields can fall sharply.

That is what farmers in parts of France and central and eastern Europe are now experiencing.

FranceAgriMer, France’s agricultural office, said only 27% of the country’s grain maize crop was rated good or excellent as of August 31. It was the weakest rating in the agency’s records dating back to 2011.

The damage has been particularly severe because maize's most important growth period coincided with intense summer heat and water shortages.

France faces a possible repeat of 1976

France is at the centre of Europe's maize crisis.

Earlier forecasts already pointed to a substantial decline in production. But analysts have warned that the final harvest could be much worse, with some estimates suggesting output could fall by around half.

That would take production to its lowest level since 1976, another year remembered for exceptionally hot and dry conditions.

The comparison with 1976 gives this year's downturn particular significance. It is not simply another weak harvest caused by an isolated weather event; farmers and analysts are increasingly concerned about whether repeated heat and drought are changing the economics of growing maize in parts of Europe.

Some farmers have already been forced to make difficult decisions before the crop reaches normal harvesting maturity.

In severely affected areas, maize plants have been cut early and diverted for livestock feed rather than being harvested for grain.

Hungary and Romania are also under pressure

The problems extend eastward.

Hungary and Romania, both important maize-producing countries, have suffered from repeated drought, high temperatures and declining soil moisture.

Hungary, traditionally a maize exporter, is expected to import the crop this year. Romania has also seen its exportable surplus shrink substantially after years of weather-related losses.

The European Commission's latest forecast puts the EU's 2026 maize harvest at around 50.1 million tonnes. That would represent a near two-decade low and highlights how widespread the pressure has become.

Some areas have fared better. Rainfall has helped Romania avoid the worst of the damage this year, while Poland is emerging as one of the stronger maize producers within the bloc.

But those pockets of resilience may not be enough to offset losses elsewhere.

Europe’s farming calendar is being rewritten

The maize crisis also illustrates a broader change taking place across European agriculture.

Farmers are increasingly dealing with weather conditions that do not simply reduce yields — they alter the timing of the entire growing season.

Earlier heat can accelerate crop development. Extended drought can then strike when plants need water most. Extreme temperatures can compound the damage, leaving farmers with crops that mature earlier but produce substantially less.

That creates a difficult equation for agriculture: earlier does not necessarily mean better.

For farmers, the challenge is now to adapt planting dates, crop varieties, irrigation systems and even the choice of crops themselves to conditions that are changing faster than traditional farming calendars.

A warning for Europe’s food supply

The 2026 maize season is becoming an important test of how European agriculture can cope with a warmer and more volatile climate.

The potential return to production levels last seen around 1976 in France is particularly striking. Meanwhile, the EU-wide harvest is heading towards a multi-year low, increasing the likelihood of greater reliance on imports.

What makes the situation especially significant is that the problem is not confined to one failed harvest.

If extreme heat, drought and water shortages continue to recur, farmers may increasingly move away from crops such as maize in the most vulnerable regions and turn to varieties that can survive with less water.

Europe's fields may therefore be entering a new agricultural era — one where the first sign of climate stress is not necessarily a failed harvest, but a harvest that arrives weeks earlier and produces far less food.
