While addressing the gathering, Trump referred to Greenland as a “piece of ice” and went on to call it Iceland, triggering a wave of jokes and viral posts online. Soon after his remarks, “Iceland” began trending on X, with users sharing memes poking fun at the mix-up.
Meanwhile, Trump ruled out the use of force in his renewed push to acquire Greenland, but insisted that no other nation could adequately secure the territory.
“People thought I would use force, but I don’t have to use force,” Trump said at the forum. “I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force.”
His comments came during a closely watched economic speech that has been overshadowed by growing transatlantic tensions and concerns in Europe over his Greenland proposal. Trump downplayed the issue as a “small ask” for a “piece of ice,” arguing that a potential acquisition would pose no threat to the NATO alliance, which includes Denmark and the United States.
“No nation or group of nations is in any position to secure Greenland other than the United States,” he said, adding that he was seeking immediate negotiations to discuss the acquisition.
Trump’s remarks are expected to loom over the WEF agenda, as global political and business leaders debate economic and geopolitical trends. NATO leaders have warned that his Greenland strategy could destabilise the alliance, while leaders in Denmark and Greenland have proposed expanded US involvement on the strategically important island of around 57,000 people.
“We want a piece of ice for world protection, and they won’t give it,” Trump said, addressing a packed hall of business and political leaders.
