Hundreds of migrants head towards US border as Trump's popularity dwindles ahead of midterm polls

Hundreds of migrants are reportedly heading towards the US border. According to reports, the caravan, which started in Honduras, is currently passing through Mexico. The development comes as US President Donald Trump's popularity has declined ahead of the midterm elections.

According to Spanish news agency EFE, the caravan began with 200-400 Honduran migrants who left San Pedro Sula in small groups and headed towards the border with Guatemala. Many others from El Salvador, Guatemala, Ecuador and Haiti later joined the group, known as 'Faith and Hope', swelling its numbers to more than 600.

Many members of the group, Newsweek reported, plan to cross into the US, while others plan to find work in Mexico. The caravan has added to the political debate in the US ahead of the midterm polls.


Illegal immigration was one of the key issues cited in Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election. During his second term, Trump has cracked down on border crossings, declared a national emergency at the US-Mexico border, deployed active-duty military personnel and National Guard troops to support border operations, imposed extensive restrictions on asylum access, and pursued a policy of detaining and removing migrants who cross illegally rather than releasing them into the United States.


Following these measures, illegal border crossings are said to have decreased by about 94% compared with the Joe Biden administration. According to reports, 8,870 people were apprehended along the southern border in August 2026. Notably, the Trump administration claims that none of those arrested for illegal crossings have been released into the US over the past 16 months.

The news of the caravan comes at an interesting time. According to a CNN-SSRS poll, Trump is now even more unpopular as US president than he was in 2018. The poll found that only about a third of Americans approve of his performance as president.

However, the arrival of the caravan could complicate the Democrats' political calculations, as immigration was one of the issues that helped Trump defeat his Democratic opponent in the presidential election.

Meanwhile, many people have taken to social media to question the timing of the caravan and who is funding it. It remains to be seen how the development will affect the upcoming US midterm elections.
