What began as an ordinary traffic stop in Mexico turned into an extraordinary encounter with one of the world's most wanted criminals.

Netflix's new thriller Facing El Chapo revisits the events surrounding Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán's recapture in January 2016, when two federal police officers unknowingly stopped the fugitive after he had escaped a military operation.

Alfonso Herrera plays Carmona, while Noé Hernández portrays Rosales. Héctor Kotsifakis takes on the role of Guzmán.

The real names of the two officers who captured Guzmán have not been publicly disclosed, according to Netflix's account of the story.

That has allowed the movie to dramatize their situation while drawing on the known circumstances surrounding the arrest.

A real operation becomes a Netflix thriller

Director Chava Cartas said the story emerged after his work on Counterattack, when the filmmakers came across the account of the officers who had risked their lives to capture Guzmán.

The appeal was obvious: the real events already contained the ingredients of a thriller.

There was a fugitive who had escaped prison, a military raid, a chase through underground tunnels and sewers, stolen vehicles and an unexpected police stop.

But the filmmakers were particularly interested in the decision that came after the arrest.

Cartas described the movie as a realistic story designed to make viewers consider what they might do in the same situation.

The cast includes several Mexican actors familiar to Netflix audiences.

Herrera plays federal officer Arturo Carmona, while Hernández portrays his more unpredictable and experienced partner, Héctor Rosales.

Kotsifakis portrays Guzmán, with Juan Pablo Cruz García playing Gastélum Ávila.

Paola Fernández appears as Isaura Carmona, Arturo's wife.

The film uses fictionalized character names for the officers while retaining the historical figure at the center of the story.

When did El Chapo's story reach its next chapter?
