"How many kids?": Epstein heckler’s question sends shockwaves through Mark Carney rally
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney found himself at the centre of controversy after a heckler confronted him about an alleged connection to Jeffrey Epstein. The question stemmed from a viral image showing Carney, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Tom Hanks ...
The confrontation followed the circulation of an image on social media, allegedly showing Carney sitting with Ghislaine Maxwell and Hollywood actor Tom Hanks. The image, shared widely on platforms such as Facebook, X, and Instagram, was captioned: "Why was Canada's new Liberal woke Prime Minister Mark Carney on Epstein Island with Ghislaine Maxwell & Tom Hanks !!!"
Experts Say Image is AI-Generated
Despite the online uproar, multiple experts have dismissed the image as a fabrication. James O’Brien, a professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, noted several inconsistencies, such as "the misplaced chair-back poking up behind Carney’s left shoulder" and "distorted hands." He also pointed out that all three individuals in the image appeared to have missing fingernails on one hand, while Hanks’ knuckles looked misshapen.Professor Rob Cover of RMIT University in Melbourne added that "the marginal difference in focus across the three people" suggested digital manipulation. He also noted that Carney and Hanks looked more like their present-day selves, rather than younger, as they would have been during Maxwell’s last known public appearances.
A higher-quality version of the image was found to have a watermark from Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI. Reuters confirmed that xAI did not respond to requests for comment.
Epstein and Maxwell’s Criminal History
Jeffrey Epstein was arrested in 2019 on federal charges of sex trafficking but was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell weeks later. Authorities ruled his death a suicide. His longtime associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, was convicted in 2021 for recruiting and grooming underage girls for Epstein and is serving a 20-year sentence in a Florida prison. These high-profile crimes have fuelled numerous conspiracy theories, with AI-generated images and misinformation often spreading online.
Political Fallout Ahead of Canadian Elections
Carney’s allies have dismissed the controversy as a political smear campaign. One supporter told the Toronto Sun, "This is another example of how Pierre Poilievre and [his PR head] have always played politics, and it shows again how terrified they are to fight Mark Carney."The timing of the incident is crucial. Canada is set to hold elections on April 28, and Carney, who was sworn in as Prime Minister on March 14 after Justin Trudeau’s resignation, is seeking a strong mandate. The campaign has been tense, especially amid a trade war with the United States.
Disinformation and the Role of AI
This incident underscores the growing role of AI-generated disinformation in politics. Reuters has previously debunked misinformation involving Epstein and Hollywood figures like Tom Hanks. Experts warn that fabricated images could shape public opinion in elections worldwide. The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
