House of the Dragon season 4 will be its last

House of the Dragon's third season has just ended and the next one, the Season 4, will bring HBO's Targaryen saga to an end. Filming for the final chapter, which could be its bloodiest yet, is expected to begin in early 2027 and the final episodes likely arriving in 2028, the series is heading toward the end of the Dance of the Dragons — a stage where dragons, not armies, will determine who survives.

HBO has confirmed that House of the Dragon will end with its fourth season. The decision follows the natural conclusion of the Targaryen history depicted in George R.R. Martin's source material.

Showrunner Ryan Condal has described what lies ahead as the "end of days phase of the Dance of the Dragons."

"Armies really don't matter anymore. What's going to matter coming into this end game is who's got a dragon and which dragon is on which side and fighting for whom."

That could make Season 4 dramatically different from the earlier chapters of the series. As the Targaryen civil war reaches its final stages, control of the remaining dragons will become increasingly important.

House of the Dragon Season 4 could be Rhaenyra's darkest chapter

Rhaenyra Targaryen's transformation is expected to be at the heart of the final season.

Emma D'Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra, has already hinted at how dramatically the character changes.

"Rhaenyra begins the season doubtful of her rightness," she said. "But I think by the end of episode 8, she is resolute in her wrongness."

That shift could have major consequences for Rhaenyra's future.

Her battle for the Iron Throne has already cost countless lives, and the final season is expected to push her further into morally questionable territory. Her declaration, "I am the Prince that was promised," has only added to speculation that Rhaenyra could embrace a much darker identity.

The transformation has prompted comparisons with Daenerys Targaryen's controversial final storyline in Game of Thrones. But unlike Daenerys, Rhaenyra's story is following a historical account already established in Martin's Fire & Blood.

Battle of the Gullet could be Season 4's biggest spectacle

One of the biggest events still waiting to be adapted is the Battle of the Gullet.

Condal has described it as arguably the second most anticipated action sequence in the book and potentially the biggest action event the House of the Dragon production has attempted.

That scale could help explain the lengthy wait for the final season.

The series has increasingly relied on elaborate visual effects for its dragons and large-scale battles, and Season 4 is expected to require even more extensive production work.

Helaena's death could change everything for Alicent

Season 3 ended with the Targaryen war becoming even more devastating.

The Battle of Tumbleton resulted in the deaths of Ormund Hightower and Roderick Dustin. Meanwhile, Helaena Targaryen died by suicide off-screen, leaving behind a tapestry that appears to foreshadow Rhaenyra's future.

Rhaenyra's return to the Red Keep coincided with the news of Helaena's death.

But Alicent did not know her daughter had died.

That creates one of the biggest emotional questions for Season 4: what will Alicent do when she discovers the truth?

Her grief and anger could become a major driver of the story as the war enters its final phase.

Director and producer Andrij Parekh offered a grim assessment of where the story stands after Season 3:

"There's definitely no winner at the end of season 3. It's just death and destruction."

Will Rhaenyra, Alicent and Daemon survive?

Rhaenyra and Alicent are expected to remain central to the final season, with Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke returning as the two key figures at the center of the Targaryen conflict.

Matt Smith's Daemon Targaryen also survived the events surrounding Tumbleton, leaving his fate as another major question heading into the final episodes.

But with the story now approaching its established endpoint, fans know that survival is far from guaranteed.

The final season is expected to feature the downfall of several major characters as the Targaryen dynasty tears itself apart.

House of the Dragon Season 4 release date

There is still no official premiere date for Season 4, but production is expected to begin in early 2027, with the final episodes anticipated in 2028.

The writers' room opened in January, and scripts are already being developed for HBO. Condal has delivered a draft of the first episode.

The roughly two-year gap between seasons is largely linked to the enormous visual-effects workload involved in bringing the final battles and dragons to the screen.

HBO's roadmap has also indicated that House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will continue through 2028, with a second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms expected in 2027.

The end of the Dance of the Dragons is coming

The four-season plan means House of the Dragon will not continue indefinitely. The story is moving toward the natural endpoint of the Targaryen civil war depicted in the source material.

As Condal explained: The idea has always been to follow the history of the Targaryens. If you know the books, you know how the Targaryens end up. So there is a natural end to this particular history."

That makes Season 4 more than another chapter in the HBO franchise. It will be the final reckoning for Rhaenyra, Alicent, Daemon and the other Targaryen dragonlords.

The Battle of the Gullet, Helaena's death, Rhaenyra's increasingly ruthless transformation and the dwindling number of surviving dragons could all push the series toward an ending filled with betrayal, destruction and death.

After years of fighting over who deserves the Iron Throne, the Targaryens are finally approaching the moment when the cost of the crown will come due.
