The UK is battling a “quad-demic” of winter illnesses, including flu, norovirus, RSV, and COVID-19, amidst rising concerns about another virus, HMPV (human metapneumovirus). This comes as China reports a surge in HMPV cases, raising fears of a wider spread.

HMPV causes symptoms similar to the flu, common cold, and COVID-19, including fever, cough, sore throat, and fatigue. Severe cases can lead to pneumonia. While Chinese officials describe the HMPV surge as seasonal, concerns remain about its severity and potential to strain healthcare systems.

The UK is already experiencing high rates of flu, with hospitalization rates increasing significantly in December. According to Daily Star, the “quad-demic” is placing considerable pressure on the NHS, particularly during the winter season when people spend more time indoors, increasing transmission risks.

Dr. David Lloyd, an NHS GP, told Sky News Breakfast: “This is peak time, so even if you are fit and healthy, your chances of catching all of these illnesses is quite high. Vaccines work against the quad-demic.”

He added that vaccination can “halve your risk” of contracting these illnesses.

Data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) shows a sharp rise in flu cases, especially among children aged five to 14. NHS national medical director, Professor Sir Stephen Powis, stated“The winter flu season has not only hit the NHS early this year, but it is potentially on track to be one of the worst we have ever seen, as the ‘quad-demic’ continues to increase pressure across services…Frontline NHS staff are currently under significant pressure - and as families and friends have gathered over the festive period and to celebrate the new year, we expect the peak of seasonal viruses is yet to come.”

While most people recover from these illnesses without medical intervention, they can be serious for vulnerable groups, such as babies and older adults. RSV, for example, can lead to bronchiolitis in babies and pneumonia in both babies and older adults.

HMPV cases are also increasing in the UK, according to a government study. Professor Sir Andrew Pollard, Director of the Oxford Vaccine Group at the University of Oxford, told the Science Media Centre, “It [HMPV] is one of the many viruses which circulate in the winter and add to the winter pressures on the NHS…The reports of respiratory infections in China in the past few days appear to be attributed to both influenza and this human meta pneumovirus (HMPV), which is rather similar to the situation in the UK this week.”

Notably, there is no vaccine for HMPV as of now, but trials are underway.
