American actress Hayden Panettiere, best known for her roles in television shows such as Heroes and Nashville, died last month at the age of 36. Her death came just weeks before her 37th birthday. At the time, authorities did not disclose a cause of death. Now, however, reports citing multiple law enforcement sources claim Panettiere may have died after taking a single pill that was believed to be oxycodone but allegedly contained fentanyl.

According to TMZ, Panettiere had apparently met with her longtime drug dealer in Los Angeles before traveling to South Carolina. She died there on August 16 in what authorities suspect may have been an overdose. The sources cited by the outlet claimed that Panettiere appeared to have taken only one pill on the day of her death. They alleged that the pill was fatal because it had been contaminated with fentanyl, a highly potent synthetic opioid.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed that fentanyl caused Panettiere's death. Toxicology results were expected to take several weeks, with officials warning that the final results could take as long as 12 weeks.

Authorities reportedly investigate alleged drug dealer

According to reports, investigators with the Drug Enforcement Administration in Los Angeles and South Carolina are looking into the circumstances surrounding Panettiere's death, including her alleged drug supplier.

Her former on-and-off partner, Brian Hickerson, who was reportedly with Panettiere during her trip and at the South Carolina apartment where she died, has also spoken with DEA officials, according to TMZ.

It remains unclear what Hickerson told investigators. He had previously told police that Panettiere had a "bag of medication" with her. Police records reportedly listed nine different types of medication, although the names of the drugs were redacted.

Until authorities release the toxicology findings and an official cause of death, the precise circumstances surrounding Panettiere's death remain unconfirmed.
