HBO has officially renewed its upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ television series for a second season even before the first season premieres this Christmas, according to Variety.

The move is in line with HBO’s long-term vision of adapting all seven of JK Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter’ books into seven television seasons over the next decade.

As per Variety, Season 2 will adapt ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ and is scheduled to begin filming this fall.

Writer Jon Brown, who worked on the first season, has now been elevated to co-showrunner for Season 2 alongside existing showrunner Francesca Gardiner.

Speaking about the development, Gardiner said that the overlapping production schedules for the first two seasons made it essential to bring in a co-showrunner to maintain momentum. She also praised Brown as a talented writer and collaborator, recalling their professional journey together from ‘Succession’ to ‘Harry Potter.’

Brown expressed excitement about stepping into the new role, saying he was thrilled to continue working with Gardiner on the iconic franchise. He added that writing for ‘Philosopher’s Stone’ had been a joy and thanked HBO and Gardiner for their confidence in him.

Season 1, titled ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ — based on the UK title of the first book — follows 11-year-old Harry Potter, played by Dominic McLaughlin, as he discovers his admission to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The story introduces him to a magical world while forcing him to confront a dark threat connected to his past.

Gardiner also serves as executive producer along with director Mark Mylod, JK Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts of Bronte Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films. The series is being produced by Warner Bros. Television.
