US media later reported that five people, including a New York Police Department officer and the suspected shooter, were dead. A law enforcement source told CNN that four people were killed in the incident, including the officer, and added that the suspect died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury. However, the details remain preliminary, and the condition of the injured civilians is still unclear.
New York Mayor Eric Adams confirmed in a video message on X that there were “multiple injuries” as a result of the shooting. Reports from the New York Post suggested that the attacker was wearing a bulletproof vest and carried an AR-style rifle. He is said to have opened fire inside the office tower, wounding a police officer and a bystander, both of whom were in critical condition at the time.
The suspect reportedly barricaded himself inside the building, possibly on the 32nd floor. Soon after, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Disch announced on X that the situation had been contained and the lone shooter had been neutralised. The man, believed to be 27 years old and from Las Vegas, died from a self-inflicted wound, CNN reported. He was captured on surveillance entering the building with a rifle. Early background checks revealed no significant criminal history.
The skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue, where the incident occurred, houses major financial firms such as Blackstone, KPMG, and Deutsche Bank, as well as the NFL’s headquarters. Following the shooting, a large number of police officers gathered at the scene, and the FBI confirmed that agents from its New York office were also providing support.
Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attack and working to confirm further details about the suspect and victims.
