Google Chrome is now getting updates every 2 weeks starting September 2026 on Desktop, Android and iOS: Here's what users need to know

Google Chrome has moved to a two-week release cycle, from the current four-week cycle starting September 2026. The new schedule is applicable to Chrome on desktop, Android, and iOS, starting with Chrome 153.

The tech giant said smaller, more frequent releases should make updates easier to test and fix, adding that the weekly security updates and the 8-week Extended Stable schedule will continue separately.

According to Tech Radar, Google has confirmed that it has officially moved from a four-week Stable release cycle to a two-week one with the launch of Chrome 153.

What does this mean for Google Chrome users?

Google said the change will give users and developers faster access to new features, performance upgrades and fixes. At the same time, each update will cover a smaller set of changes, making it easier to test releases and quickly identify and resolve any issues.

“While releases will be more frequent, their smaller scope minimizes disruption and simplifies post-release debugging,” Google said in its developer blog post. "With automated AI discovery tools and community bug reports generating higher patch volume, shorter release cycles make managing security fixes significantly simpler,"the company wrote.

The update basically means that new features reach the stable version of Chrome every two weeks instead of a month. If developers are rolling out interoperability additions or bug and security fixes, they'll get to users a lot faster now.

"The new release cycle means that a new beta and stable version of Chrome will ship every two weeks, starting from the stable release of Chrome 153 on September 8th. This applies to all platforms—Desktop, Android, and iOS. There will be no changes to the Dev and the Canary channels," Google explained.

No change to Chrome Extended Stable

Google said the Chrome Extended Stable channel will continue on its existing eight-week release cycle, giving enterprise administrators and Chromium developers more time to manage updates. Introduced in 2021, the channel is designed for organizations that need additional time to test and deploy new Chrome versions.

The company also said Chromebook users will continue to have extended release options. New Chrome versions will roll out to Chromebooks only after dedicated platform testing, as Google works to adapt its release channels to the new two-week browser update cycle. More details on milestone updates for managed devices will be shared later.

Desktop, Android and iOS versions of Chrome will all be impacted by the change, with Chrome 154 already slated for a September 22 release.

More broadly, Google says Chrome isn't the only browser getting more frequent updates. Microsoft, Mozilla and Brave are also making similar changes, and they're all undergoing those changes right now.
