George Russell reignited his championship challenge with a controlled victory in the Dutch Grand Prix sprint, holding off the field at Zandvoort to claim his third sprint win of the season and cut into Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli's lead, according to a report by ESPN.

Starting from pole, Russell made a clean getaway and quickly dealt with the early threat from Lando Norris. Once clear, the British driver settled into a measured race, managing his tyres while keeping enough pace in reserve for the closing stages.

Russell eventually crossed the line 1.3 seconds ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who produced the race's standout overtaking move by passing Norris at Turn 1 on lap 17.

Antonelli loses points but keeps championship advantage

Antonelli started the sprint as the championship leader and finished fourth after overtaking Oscar Piastri around the outside at the opening corner.

Although Russell's victory helped him gain ground, Antonelli remains comfortably ahead in the title race. The gap was reduced by three points, leaving Russell 56 points behind before Sunday's Dutch Grand Prix.

ESPN further reported that Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, had a difficult afternoon. The seven-time world champion finished seventh, while Norris took third after resisting late pressure from Antonelli.

Piastri finished fifth, with Max Verstappen coming home sixth following his recently announced new Red Bull contract.

Leclerc's late move changes the sprint podium

For much of the 24-lap race, overtaking opportunities were scarce. Ferrari's decision to put Leclerc on soft tyres initially failed to deliver an advantage, but the strategy became more effective as the race progressed.

Leclerc closed in on Norris and made his move into Turn 1, taking second place and securing another strong result for Ferrari ahead of the main race. Antonelli then chased Norris on the final lap but could not find a way past.

Rain arrives just after Russell takes the flag

Russell's victory celebrations were followed almost immediately by rain at Zandvoort, with the Mercedes driver admitting the changing weather could have made the final stages considerably more complicated.

“One more lap and it would have been a very different end to the race,” Russell said, adding that Ferrari appeared particularly quick ahead of qualifying.

With qualifying still to come, the Dutch Grand Prix weekend remains wide open. Russell has given his title hopes a timely lift, but Antonelli's championship lead remains substantial as the battle heads into Sunday's main event.
