Hulk Hogan, the American sports and entertainment icon who helped turn professional wrestling into a global spectacle and was a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, has died at the age of 71, WWE confirmed on Thursday.

"WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. One of pop culture's most recognizable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s," the organization said in a statement.

Police in Clearwater, Florida, said they responded to a medical emergency at Hogan’s residence on Thursday morning. The wrestling legend had suffered cardiac arrest and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

As news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from across the entertainment, sports, and political worlds.

Ric Flair, fellow wrestling legend and longtime friend, posted an emotional tribute: "I am absolutely shocked to hear about the passing of my close friend @HulkHogan! Hulk has been by my side since we started in the wrestling business. An incredible athlete, talent, friend, and father!

Our friendship has meant the world to me. He was always there for me—even when I didn’t ask. He was one of the first to visit me in the hospital when I had a 2% chance of living, and he prayed by my bedside. He also lent me money when Reid was sick.

Hulkster, no one will ever compare to you! Rest in peace, my friend."

Triple H reflected on Hogan’s towering legacy in WWE: “WWE would not be where it is today without the larger-than-life characters that compete in the ring—and few, if any, loomed larger than Terry ‘Hulk Hogan’ Bollea. He was the archetype of what it meant to be a ‘Superstar’—a global sensation who inspired millions. Whether clad in red and yellow or nWo black and white, Hulk Hogan was simply iconic. As a Real American or the leader of one of the industry’s biggest factions, he transcended the business and elevated it to heights never before seen. There was no one like The Hulkster, and there may never be another. My family sends condolences to his family, friends, and fans.”

Piers Morgan wrote: “RIP Hulk Hogan—the most iconic wrestler in history, a wonderful character, and in person, a far gentler, charming, intelligent man, far removed from his snarling beast ring (and Rocky movie!) persona. Sad news.”

Donald Trump, former U.S. President, simply posted: "R.I.P. to a legend. HULK HOGAN."

Kane, WWE star and former mayor Glenn Jacobs, shared: “Hulk Hogan was a true legend. I was fortunate to work with him a couple of times, including this memorable one. It was easy to do a Hulkster impersonation when, like millions of guys my age, I'd practiced it in the mirror a thousand times growing up.”

Senator JD Vance tweeted: “Hulk Hogan was a great American icon. One of the first people I ever truly admired as a kid. The last time I saw him, we promised we’d get beers together next time we met. The next time will have to be on the other side, my friend. Rest in peace.”
