The brief disruption came a day before Thanksgiving, which is among the busiest periods of the year for air travel in the United States.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said on Wednesday that departures to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport were grounded due to security.

The ground stop was expected to last about an hour, ending at 4 p.m. (2100 GMT), with a moderate chance of an extension, according to an FAA advisory. The advisory did not elaborate on the nature of the security issue.

The advisory comes as law enforcement was responding to the shooting of two members of the National Guard near the White House on Wednesday.

Reuters could not immediately establish whether there was any link between the two incidents.
