Fatty liver disease has become one of the fastest-growing health concerns worldwide, fueled by poor diets, obesity, and sedentary habits. Often progressing without noticeable symptoms, it can eventually cause serious complications such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. However, simple changes in diet can save you from potentially getting liver cancer.

According to Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a Harvard-trained gastroenterologist, you just need three foods to protect your liver. "Science shows these foods can support your liver and overall metabolic health—worth adding to your routine," the doctor said in a video.

Everyday staples that you need

As per Dr Sethi, one should consume healthy beverages like black coffee, black tea, green tea, and matcha all contain compounds that support liver function. Coffee has been linked to lower enzyme levels and reduced risk of fibrosis, while green tea and matcha are rich in catechins that curb fat buildup.

He also recommended turmeric that contains curcumin, which is known for its strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Consuming turmeric with black pepper improves absorption and may reduce liver damage from chronic inflammation.

The “Three Bs” Diet

As per Dr Sethi, the three Bs include Berries which are packed with anthocyanins that fight oxidative stress. Besides, there's broccoli which is Rich in fibre and sulforaphane, which activate detox enzymes. Dr Sethi also recommended beetroot which is high in betalains that improvs blood flow and natural detoxification.

While food choices can support liver health, Dr. Sethi stresses that no diet works in isolation. A balanced lifestyle—including weight control, regular physical activity, limited alcohol intake, and reduced processed foods—is crucial to preventing fatty liver progression.

Why Fatty Liver Is a Growing Threat

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is unrelated to alcohol consumption, is now the most common form of chronic liver disease globally. Studies show it affects more than one in four people worldwide, with the highest prevalence in the Middle East and South America. In India, the rates vary between 9% and 53%. NAFLD is strongly linked with obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other metabolic disorders. If left unchecked, excess fat in the liver can trigger inflammation, scarring, and increase the risk of liver cancer. It is also associated with cardiovascular disease, kidney problems, and metabolic complications.
