‘Fake news, be quiet’: Trump lashes out at CNN reporter over aide question

The confrontation is the latest public clash between Trump and female journalists, with the president calling Holmes “very disrespectful” and accusing her of being “fake news” after she continued asking questions.
The White House’s Rapid Response account also targeted Holmes in a post on X, accusing her of asking a “disgusting and inhumane question” and warning that her children would eventually see it.
Trump confronts CNN reporter
Holmes initially asked Trump about remarks made by Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff concerning his relationship with Harp, a 35-year-old executive assistant who frequently accompanies the president.Trump responded angrily as Holmes later raised another question concerning North Korea.
“You're a loud, boisterous person, you're fake news, be quiet,” Trump told the CNN reporter.
He also described her as “very disrespectful.”
The exchange took place during an Oval Office event honoring a teenage lifeguard who had rescued a child from dangerous ocean swells. Trump opened the event to questions on a range of other subjects, as he has often done during similar appearances.
CNN defends Kristen Holmes
CNN strongly rejected the White House's criticism of Holmes and said the attacks were inappropriate. The network said the remarks directed at its correspondent were “beneath the office” and expressed full support for her.
“We stand firmly behind Kristen and reject these attacks in the strongest possible terms,” CNN said in a statement.
The dispute adds to a growing list of confrontations between the Trump administration and women working in the White House press corps.
Why Natalie Harp is drawing attention
Harp has attracted increased attention in recent weeks following reports that she was among a small group of aides with Trump during a previously undisclosed Air Force One aircraft change in July.Ossoff, a Democratic senator who is considered a potential contender for the 2028 presidential race, brought Harp into the political spotlight during a campaign speech Sunday.
He accused Trump of being more focused on building a new White House ballroom and travelling with Harp than on carrying out his presidential responsibilities.
Trump responded by mocking Ossoff as a “Pee-Wee Herman lookalike” and defending plans for the reported $400 million White House ballroom. He did not directly address the comments about Harp.
Harp's unusual role around Trump
Harp, a former television news personality, has become a highly visible member of Trump's inner circle. She is frequently seen near the president and has gained the nickname “human printer” because of her role in providing him with printed information. Her relationship with Trump has also attracted attention following descriptions in Regime Change, a book published this year by two New York Times reporters.
The authors described Harp as deeply loyal to Trump and wrote that she had sent him personal letters expressing strong admiration.
The White House has vigorously defended Harp while attacking Ossoff over his remarks.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung previously responded to the senator with a crude personal insult, escalating the political fight surrounding the president's aide.
The latest clash now places CNN's Holmes at the centre of that dispute after her Oval Office question prompted an unusually forceful response from both Trump and the White House.
