Users of Meta-owned platforms Facebook and Instagram encountered technical problems early Tuesday, with reports indicating difficulties in logging in, posting comments, and viewing existing discussions. The outage appeared to impact users worldwide, particularly in the US and UK.

According to Downdetector, complaints began around 9 a.m. ET and spiked at approximately 1 p.m. in the UK (6:30 p.m. IST). Reports flooded in from across the East and West Coasts of the US, while users in the UK also experienced similar issues.

Instagram’s Comment Section Becomes Unusable

Instagram users reported that comment sections on posts and stories had become dysfunctional. Some could see comments but found they would vanish upon clicking. Others received messages stating, "No comments, start the conversation"—even when there were existing discussions.

A frustrated user described the experience: "I see comments, but when I click on them, it says no comments. When I put a comment, it disappears."

This issue left many unable to engage with content, sparking further irritation.

Facebook Users Struggle to Log In

While Instagram’s main problem revolved around missing comments, Facebook users were met with login failures. Some users found themselves locked out after signing out, while others encountered error messages preventing them from accessing their accounts.

One disgruntled Facebook user shared their frustration: "I signed out a little while ago and it was fine. Now I’m getting an error message trying to sign back in!"

Downdetector data revealed that 42% of Facebook complaints related to website functionality, 34% were login issues, and 25% concerned the app itself.

Downdetector Sees Surge in Reports

Downdetector, a website that tracks online service disruptions, recorded a sharp increase in reports as the outage unfolded. At its peak, over 500 complaints were flagged concerning Instagram alone. Facebook experienced similar volumes, with issues spread across the website, login attempts, and app navigation.

Recurring Outages Raise Concerns

This is not the first time Meta's platforms have suffered a significant disruption. Less than a month ago, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and even TikTok experienced widespread outages, leaving millions unable to use the apps.

The repeated nature of these failures has prompted concerns among users about the reliability of Meta’s infrastructure. Many turned to other social media platforms to confirm if they were alone in facing difficulties, with complaints quickly gaining traction online.

Meta Yet to Address the Outage

As of now, Meta has not issued an official response regarding the cause of the disruption or an estimated time for resolution. Users remain in the dark, awaiting an explanation or fix from the company.

Meanwhile, frustration continues to grow as individuals and businesses alike struggle with the outage. For now, many are left refreshing their feeds, hoping for normal service to resume soon.
