The White House has once again taken to social media to advocate it's Greenland ambition. This time, the post contains a cryptic message through an AI image of Donald Trump with the "Nihilist Penguin".

On Saturday, an official White House account shared the AI-generated image showing the US president walking across an icy landscape alongside a penguin, with Greenlandic imagery in the background and the caption “Embrace the penguin.”

The meme used by the White House originates from Encounters at the End of the World, directed by Werner Herzog. The film features footage of a lone Adélie penguin wandering away from its colony in Antarctica, a moment later dubbed the “Nihilist Penguin” meme.

However, the post quickly drew widespread attention and mockery online as X users pointed out with memes of their own that penguins do not inhabit Greenland, which lies in the Northern Hemisphere, and are instead, creatures of Antarctica in the Southern Hemisphere.

While the image sparked humour and criticism, it also served a familiar purpose: reinforcing the administration’s long-running narrative that Greenland is strategically vital to the United States. President Trump has repeatedly argued that control of the Arctic territory is essential for American national security, citing its location and growing geopolitical importance.

The meme surfaced just days after Washington appeared to soften its economic pressure on Europe.

The administration recently stepped back from proposed tariffs linked to Greenland following talks between President Trump and Mark Rutte on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos. Trump said afterward that a framework for a future arrangement involving Greenland would be announced in due course.

Despite the easing of trade tensions, officials in Denmark, which governs Greenland, remain wary. Earlier rhetoric from Washington—including suggestions that the US could use military force if negotiations failed—had prompted Denmark and allied European nations to reinforce their presence on the island.

Greenland campaign goes digital

The penguin image is not an isolated case.

In recent weeks, the Trump administration has increasingly turned to social media visuals and AI-generated posts to amplify its Greenland message.

President Trump previously shared images portraying Greenland as a future US territory, including one that depicted him alongside Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, standing next to a sign declaring Greenland part of the United States.

Another post showed an altered map expanding US borders to include Greenland and other regions, further fuelling debate over whether the imagery is intended as symbolism, provocation or a negotiating tactic.

By shifting the campaign to social media, often through controversial or humorous visuals, the White House appears intent on keeping the issue alive in public discourse, even as formal diplomacy with Europe continues behind closed doors.
